Pelton earns All-American honors

Milestones
No. 3 Jeffrey Pelton (Bellevue 2008) earned NCAA Div. II All-American first team for placing third at the NCAA Wrestling Championships for No. 2 Notre Dame College on Friday in Birmingham, Ala. The Falcons placed third with a score at 103 Ω. Pelton ends his season with a record at 20-4. All rankings are from Feb. 28 from TheMat website, which specializes in collegiate wrestling rankings.

Darren Johnson (Western Reserve 2011) earned NCAA Div. II All-American first team for No. 9 Findlay with the 4x400, which placed seventh at the Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday in Birmingham, Ala. The quartet finished with a time of 3:14, while the Oilers ended 15th with a score at 13. Rankings are from the March 5 poll by The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Spotlight
Jake Cramer
(Oak Harbor 2011) qualified for the NCAA Div. II Wrestling Championships for the second consecutive season with a fourth-place finish at 174 at the NCAA Super Regional No. 2 on Saturday at Ashland. At the national meet, the sophomore contributed a 1-2 record. For the season, he ends with a record at 22-14.

Cole Prophet (Sandusky 2008) is a member of Wayne State (17-9), who received an at-large bid to the 64-team NCAA Div. II Championship Tournament on Sunday. The senior point guard has been a catalyst for the Warriors this season. He holds a scoring average of 11.6 and an assist average at 3.9.

Chris Baldwin (Edison 2009) is a member of Findlay’s mens basketball team (22-7), who won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference championship tournament with a 75-69 victory over Lake Superior State (16-13) on Sunday in Houghton, Mich. With the win, the Oilers clinched an automatic bid to the NCAA Div. II championship tournament.

Dailyn Moore (Sandusky 2009) placed first in the 60 hurdles (8.07) for Cincinnati at the UC Miami (Ohio) Dual on March 1 at Capital in Columbus. The Bearcats claimed victory against the Redhawks, 70-61.

Chelsea Beck (Port Clinton 2011) provided wins at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles to lead Tiffin to an 8-1 win against Davis and Elkins on March 2 at home.

Amy Schlessman (Perkins 2009) remains undefeated in singles competition for Kenyon (3-1). On Friday, the senior contributed wins at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles to lead the Ladies to a 9-0 victory against Cal Lutheran (4-6) in Thousand Oaks, Calif. For the season, she holds a singles record at 3-0 and a doubles record at 3-1.

BASEBALL
Xavier Turner
(Sandusky 2012) went 2 for 3 with one run and one RBI for No. 2 Vanderbilt (15-2) in an 8-3 victory at home on March 5 against Eastern Illinois (3-8) in Nashville. For the season, the freshman holds a batting average at .310 to complement 10 runs and eight RBIs.

Taylor Emody (Edison 2010) has been the most consistent hitter for Ohio (3-10) this season with a team-leading .345 batting average to complement five RBIs and two runs. On March 5, the junior went 3 for 4 with one RBI and one run to lead the Bobcats to 10-7 victory against High Point (5-7) in High Point, N.C.

Matt Gundlach (Perkins 2009) provided consistent hitting at the plate for Ashland (6-1) to lead the Eagles to split a double-header at Southern Indiana (8-1) on March 4 in Evansville, Ind. In game one, the senior went 2 for 3 with one RBI in an 8-4 loss. In game two, he was 2 for 5 in an 8-0 win. For the season, he holds a batting average at .375 with three RBIs and two runs.

Trey Keegan (Sandusky 2011) went 1 for 3 for Bowling Green (3-9) in an 8-2 loss against West Virginia (6-6) on Thursday in Port Charlotte, Fla. For the season, the sophomore has three RBIs and two runs.

Cody Koch (Perkins 2009) has contributed one run and one RBI for Kent State (4-10). n Spencer Bryant (Perkins 2010) is contributing to the Golden Flashes pitching staff, appearing in three games as a reliever this season.

Cory Brown (Port Clinton 2011) went 1 for 4 for Mount Vernon Nazarene (5-0) in an 8-3 victory against Olivet Nazarene (5-5) on Saturday in Bourbonnais, Ill. For the season, the sophomore has four runs and one RBI.

Zac Esposito (Sandusky 2010) has totaled 17 strikeouts for Shawnee State (14-12) this season. On Friday, Esposito earned a no-decision in an 8-7 loss at Cumberlands (12-6) in Lebanon, Tenn. In the contest, he totaled eight strikeouts and allowed four earned runs through seven innings.

Derek Colston (Port Clinton 2011) has made four appearances to contribute four strikeouts for Capital (5-5).

Robert Fravel (Port Clinton 2011) has contributed alongside Colston on the Crusaders’ pitching staff. For the season, he has appeared in two contests with one start to provide four strikeouts.

Adam Manner (Bellevue 2011) has appeared in three games to compile two strikeouts and has yet to give up an earned run for Heidelberg (6-2).

Andrew Enderle (Norwalk 2009) provided one inning of relief for Anderson (1-4) in a 2-1 loss at Indiana Southeast (7-8) in New Albany, Ind.

Men’s Track and Field
Matthew Hoty (Perkins 2010) finished ninth in the shot put (57 7 æ) for Tennessee at the Iowa State Qualifier on March 2 in Ames, Iowa. The meet was not scored.

Adam Turner (Clyde 2012) was an alternate for the Ohio Wesleyan 4x400, which earned All-American recognition on Friday at the NCAA Div. III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Naperville, Ill. The quartet was runner-up in the meet with a time of 3:16.72. The No. 10 Battling Bishops finished seventh with a score at 18, while No. 1 Wisconsin La Crosse claimed the title with 74 points.

Softball
Susan Knight
(Edison 2012) went 1 for 2 with one run and one RBI to lead Cleveland State (5-9) to a 7-1 victory against Santa Clara (2-13) on Friday in Stillwater, Okla. For the season, the freshman holds a batting average at .226 to complement six runs and four RBIs.

Lexi Majoy (Huron 2009) has started every game to provide a batting average at.440 with six RBIs and three runs for Capital (6-2), who will resume competition against SUNY Cortland in Salisbury, Md.

Brooke Billings (Clyde 2011) complements Majoy s outstanding offense for Capitol with a consistent dominance for the Crusaders on the mound. The sophomore holds a record at 3-1 and an ERA at 0.51 through five starts and seven appearances. She also has totaled 20 strikeouts and one save.

Women’s Basketball
Trisha Krewson
(Perkins 2008) provided three boards for Kent State (3-27) in a 76-35 loss at Bowling Green (21-9) on Saturday in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament. For the season, the senior contributed a scoring average at 8.0 and a rebounding average at 3.8.

Women’s Golf
Hannah Schneider
(Norwalk 2012) finished 18th with a score at 136 (90-46) for Findlay on Friday at the Shootout In Arizona that was hosted by Aguila Country Club in Phoenix. The Oilers ended runner-up among the field of three teams with a score at 488, while Indianapolis claimed the title with 472 points.

Women’s Swimming
Steph Gyurke
(Perkins 2011) ended 15th in the 1650 (17:18.59) for Ohio on March 2 at the MAC championships at Buffalo in Buffalo, N.Y. Among the field of eight teams, the Bobcats ended runner-up with a score at 505, while Miami (Ohio) claimed the title with 621 points.
