FREMONT

Four area swim teams -- Sandusky, Perkins, Port Clinton and Oak Harbor -- ready themselves for the Northwest Ohio Aquatic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at Fremont Ross High School.

A year ago, the Perkins boys placed second at the event the 200 freestyle relay team broke the pool record in 1 minute, 30.24 seconds. Three members of that unit are still with the program: senior All-American Jimmy Chapman and juniors Chris Waldock and Michael Mulvin.

Stephanie Gyurke, then a freshman for the Lady Pirates, also broke a pool record at the 2008 meet, winning the 200 individual medley in 2:09.31.

The Perkins girls won the 2007 NWOAC team title and took fourth in 2008 behind champion Lima Shawnee, Napoleon and Fremont Ross. The Perkins boys have taken second in each of the past two seasons; Toledo St. John won the event last winter.

The Lady Pirates already beat Napoleon in a head-to-head meet this year, and are unbeaten in duals.

The Pirates swept the NWOAC Relays in December at Perkins High School.

For the girls last year, Oak Harbor was sixth, Sandusky was 11th and Port Clinton took 12th. The Lady Redskins could move up behind freshman MacKenzie Stewart, who was named the Most Outstanding Performer at the Sandusky Bay Conference Championships on Jan. 17.

For the boys, the Blue Streaks were fifth, the Redskins finished eighth and the Rockets were 11th.

Aside from the pool records, the only returning first-place finisher was Chapman's win in the 100 butterfly (52.90).

1,000-point club

Sandusky senior Morgan Lippus became the seventh swimmer since 1927 to tally 1,000 points in her career. One of four females in the exclusive Blue Streaks club, she won the 50 freestyle last week to reach the milestone.
