Friday's season opener couldn't come soon enough for Margaretta’s Austin Moore.
A rivalry that’s been brewing for the past three years, the 6-foot-4 senior was eager to mark a “W” next to Western Reserve.
But a win didn’t seem likely for the Polar Bears after Western Reserve outscored, outdefended and outhustled Margaretta on both sides of the floor during the first half of the game.
Margaretta responded with a third quarter surge, doubling their points in the third quarter en rout to a 49-39 victory in the first round of the first annual Vermilion Tip-Off Classic.
Moore led all scorers with 16 points.
It was a tale of two halves defensively as Western Reserve's defense broke up almost every pass the Polar Bears tried in the first half.
The Roughriders got an early lead, forcing turnovers and creating easy buckets.
Nate Ash scored 10 of his 14 points in the first half for Western Reserve.
Moore scored six points in the fourth quarter to leave no doubts for the Polar Bears.
