FREMONT — St. Paul darted out to a lead, then held off Fremont St. Joseph 68-65 in non-league boys’ basketball action Monday night.
The Flyers improved to 7-8 overall and have won two of their last three games.
St. Paul took a 17-12 first-quarter lead.
The hosts drew to within 31-30 at halftime.
The Flyers, though, started strong in the third and led 48-38 after three quarters.
St. Joseph outscored St. Paul 27-20 in the final eight minutes, but fell short on the scoreboard.
Travis Smiley had a big game for the Flyers with 16 points including 12 in the second half.
Bob Harwood, at 13 points and Sam Carper, with 10, also reached double digits.
Scottie Slauterbeck scored nine points on three, three-point baskets.
The reserve game saw St. Paul also claim a win, 40-27.
Dylan Furlong paced the Flyers with 10 points.
Trailing 19-17 at halftime, St. Paul outscored St. Joseph 23-8 in the second half.
In Saturday’s reserve game, Edison topped the Flyers 36-32.
Bryce Ostheimer netted 15 for the Chargers.
Dylan Furlong paced St. Paul with 12 points, while Christian Stang added 10.
Edison outscored the Flyers 11-6 in the fourth quarter to help in the win.
The Flyers return to Firelands Conference play Friday at Crestview.
