Step one: control the line of scrimmage. Step two: stop Mark Konieczny.
Perkins did both Friday night at Firelands Regional Medical Center stadium, beating Oak Harbor 39-14 and adding an exclamation point to their unexpected season with an outright Sandusky Bay Conference title.
The quarterback-receiver combination of Brandon Smith and Mitch Benkey combined for four touchdowns to lead the Pirates to a Week 10 victory that capped off an undefeated SBC schedule.
"That's what we came into the season trying to do, win this outright," Perkins coach Jason Ziegler said. "We talked all week about being selfish and our seniors wanted this and they weren't going to let it not happen. I am proud of our seniors, they have done everything we've asked them to for the last four years and they gave everything they had to get to where we are today. I am awfully proud of them."
Fans started chanting "SBC" with 4:21 left to play as the Pirates dumped a cooler of ice water on their coach.
Skepticism surrounded the Pirates all season but Ziegler said it only added fuel to the fire.
