Flyers' season ends in regional quarterfinal

St. Paul sought to advance to the next round of the playoffs. But Tiffin Calvert stopped the Flyers 56-27 in first-round action Friday at Whitney Field.

St. Paul closes its season at 7-4.

Calvert overcame a 21-7 deficit at the end of the first quarter, a period which featured multiple Seneca penalties.

Calvert coach Todd Fox talked about the Senecas regrouping at that point.

Calvert was led by the dual running attack of quarterback Tyler Long, a sophomore, and senior fullback Daniel Kwiat.

Long rushed the ball 20 times for 191 yards and four touchdowns, while Kwiat added 223 yards on 26 attempts and a score.

The Senecas rushed for a total of 504 yards on the evening.

The Flyers were paced by senior Michael Griffin, who carried the ball 19 times for 126 yards and a TD.

Sophomore Devin Smith added 105 yards rushing on 15 tries and a score.

Things looked good early for the Flyers as they marched 70 yards in five plays. Jesse Gross scored from the 1 and the Slauterbeck point after had the hosts on top, 7-0.

Calvert tied it at 7-7 three minutes later on Long’s 9-yard TD run.

The scoring barrage continued.

The Flyers led 21-7 after the first quarter, but Calvert managed to tie the game at 21-21 by halftime.

They then outscored St. Paul 35-6 in the second half for the win.
