Flyers beat Wildcats, Tigers

St. Paul opened the season with wins over New London and Seneca East.

A St. Paul wrestling team that veteran coach Pat Welfle believed could be as good as it wants to be started the season Wednesday night with wins.

The Flyers topped a solid New London team, 49-15 and then beat an out-manned Seneca East squad 56 at Seneca East High School.

New London won its match with Seneca East, 51-24, improving to 5-1 on the season.

The match featured a record-time pin, as St. Paul sophomore heavyweight Connor Careless flattened Seneca East’s Phillip Ballinger in seven seconds  in the final match of the night. The old mark was eight seconds.

Others who went 2-0 on the night include sophomores Joe Livengood (113), Grant Dilger (120), Wes Fritz (126); Hayden Miller (160) and Careless,

New London had three wrestlers go 2-0 with Jacob Amburgy (152);  KC Hale  and Noah Stumpf.
