Facing a 15-point deficit halfway through their dual meet against Clyde, in a battle of the only unbeaten survivors after the first day of the Sandusky Bay Conference Duals, the Pirates flipped momentum Saturday morning at Margaretta High School.
John Workman started a string of seven straight wins for a 17-point victory, and the Pirates beat the Fliers 38-21, then ran the rest of the table to cap off an unbeaten weekend with a 7-0 mark. It was the first time since 2000 Perkins won the SBC Duals.
The Fliers jumped ahead, 21-6, through the first seven matches. Pins by Blake Miller and defending Division II state-champion Chris Moore in their bouts at 152 and 170 were part of Clyde’s early lead.
The Pirates reeled off the next seven wins, with bonus bonus points from the upper weights critical in swinging the momentum.
Perkins and Clyde started the day with identical 4-0 records before their head-to-head meeting in the second match Saturday morning.
Three wrestlers for Perkins were unbeaten on the weekend. Junior Tony Didion (160) and senior Nick Waldron 120) were both 7-0, while freshman Kordell Chaney (220) posted a 6-0 mark.
Junior Beau Minnick (145) posted a 7-0 record this weekend for Clyde, and is 27-5 on the year, and junior Blake Miller (152) was also unbeaten with a 6-0 mark to move to 22-2.
Following Perkins and Clyde were Oak Harbor, Margaretta, Huron, Edison, St. Mary Central Catholic and Port Clinton.
