Roughriders rally to beat Polar Bears in state team tournament

The last two matches decided what school was going to move on in the Division III state team wrestling tournament Wednesday at the St. Paul Convocation Center.

The last two Western Reserve wrestlers needed pins for the Roughriders to  advance in the state team tournament.

Brandon Workman and Ian Ramos obliged.

Each recorded a pin as Western got past Margaretta 36-35.

Western faces Upper Sandusky next week at a site to be determined for the regional championship.

The Polar Bears built a 35-24 lead with three straight pins.

Workman stepped to the center of the mat and pinned Edward Huber at 4:43 in a 220-pound match.

Ramos followed with one at 4:14 over Alex Loring at 285 to end the match.

Western also received pins from Chase Griffith at 126, Mason Robson 132 and Josh Sommers 145.

For Margaretta, Tyler Rogers at 113, Ryan Green 170, Allen Riha 182 and Drake Reed 195 all snared pins.

To reach the finals, Western defeated Huron 39-32 and Margaretta topped St. Paul 32-27.

Nathan Beal at 120, Griffith 126, Robson and Ramos all registered pins for the Roughriders.

The Tigers had wins from Brysen Mansor 113, Will Sams 145 and Chuck Basting 195 by pin.

In the win over St. Paul, Harris and Deven Taylor (152) both recorded pins for the Polar Bears.

St. Paul gained wins from Wes Fritz at 120 by pin and Jesse Gross 138 and Connor Careless 285 forfeits.
