Norwalk gained a split in Northern Ohio League wrestling action Thursday night.

The Truckers defeated Willard 42-32 and lost to Sandusky 56-21.

The Flashes went 0-2 on the night.

Sandusky defeated Willard 51-23.

Of Norwalk’s seven wins against the Flashes in 13 matches — the 220-pound weight class was a double forfeit — four were pins from Jarrod Smith (138 pounds), Jake Kluding (145), Ross Clark (152) and Charles Nash (106).

Major Moore (132) and Fabian Ortega (170) gained pins for the Flashes.

Kaden Moore (113) won a decision and Juan Estrella (120) posted a tech fall.

“(Norwalk’s) not bad at all, pretty solid top to bottom — the same as Sandsky,” Willard coach Kipp Cullin said. “We know we’re not much of a dual team, but it’s about getting matches and mat time.”

Cullin said Thursday’s tri-meet is a different environment that what the Flashes will have at the conference championships, which are during all-day events. But his wrestlers got to face off against some of the opponents they’ll see again.

“Some of those close matches, the guys maybe in a couple weeks can get those to swing in our favor,” Cullin said. “Getting on film and watching (film) and seeing the areas we need to improve on helps. There’s definitely some advantages to seeing a guy and see what they do.

“You can learn a ton from a loss and the mistakes you continue to make in areas we need to improve,’’ the coach added. “Overall, we need to be coachable the entire season.”

For Norwalk against Sandusky, Colton Anderson (285) took a 13-9 decision to start a quick string of three wins for the Truckers.

Nash (106) and Derek Wilson (113) added pins.

Kluding (145) also had a pin for Norwalk.

Against Sandusky, Willard received two pins in the final two matches by Kaden Moore (113), Estrella (120) and Jacob Cofer (145), while Major Moore (132) earned a 21-4 technical fall victory.

“Juan has been up and down all year, and tonight he went out and just had fun,” Cullin said. It showed in his face. He had a little bounce, a little swagger.

“Major continues to do his thing and wrestle with a lot of confidence. His abilities are unbelievable,’’ he added. “We’re very blessed to have one of the best in the state in the room every single day.”

The Truckers are slated to compete in the Rieman Invitational Jan. 25, while the Flashes are at the Wooster Invitational Saturday.
