NORWALK — Huron has had a nice boys basketball season.

Cutting down the nets at Norwalk High School after winning a Division III sectional championship with a 62-47 decision over Lakota made it a whole lot better.

“These kids really played their butts off,” Tigers coach Bobby James said. “They just didn’t want to lose. They got a taste of a winning season and they don’t want it to end.”

Huron had just four wins last year and now stand at 14-8 heading into a Division III district match up at 6:15 Thursday against Plymouth.

“This is huge,” James said. “We haven’t won a game here in I can’t remember.I think we’ve won one game in six or seven years here and now we’ve won two and are cutting down the nets.”

The Tigers used a fast start that turned into a scorching second quarter to gain control of the contest.

Huron hit 5 of 8 shots over the first eight minutes with three treys to take a 14-12 lead. Then the Tigers converted 8 of 11 shots from the field and 4 of 5 from behind the arc during a 21-point outburst in the second.

In the meantime, the Raiders were just 2 of 9 from the field and fell behind by a 35-16 margin before Jake Wiserman scored with a second remaining to trim the deficit by two points.

“We just moved the ball so well,” said Huron senior Zack Grieves, who had a game-high 20 points with nine rebounds and a pair of blocks. “We finally put a game together as a team. I’m just so proud of these guys.”

The Tigers did cool off in the second half, hitting 10 of 22 shots from the field. That allowed Lakota to trim the deficit to 44-31 by the end of the third quarter and to 54-44 with 2:18 to play. But Grieves scored the final four points of an 8-1 spurt that finished off the Raiders (14-7).

“We’ve put so much time building for this year and we finally got it done,” Grieves said. “It’s been 2003 (that Huron has won a sectional title). This is something I’ve definitely been waiting for.”

Wiserman scored 14 points on 5 of 15 shooting, while Scott Hoffman added 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead Lakota.

Eric Volz had 11 points and Brian Bollenbacher added 10 to join Grieves in double-digits for the Tigers, with Brandon Poorman chipping in nine points and seven rebounds.

“We shot the ball pretty well in that first half,” James said. “That was the best we shot all year, and what a game to bring it to.”
