DIVISION III SEMIFINALS Two area wrestlers, Norwalk's Mitchell Gross and Chris Phillips run into each other in the semifinals of 171. Phillips hung a 20-7 major decision on Gross in the sectional finals this season. They didn't meet in the district finals because Gross lost in the semis. DIVISION II SEMIFINALS Stone marches toward a rematch with Johnni DiJulius, who beat Stone in the state finals last season, 1-0. DIVISION I SEMIFINALS Jerrel Valliant drew Anthony Salupo in the semifinals. Valliant has lost both meetings with Salupo so far this season. QUARTERFINALS Division III The Eagles lead D-III, 44.5 to Chanel's 38.5, followed by CVCA (35), West Jefferson (30), reigning state champ Troy Christian (25). SMCC's Joe Dauch fell in his first match of the day to Brian Spangler of LaGrange, a pin 1:52 in. He'll have another chance this morning, wrestling Andrew Hennigan of Cincinnati Purcell Marian in the consolations. Logan Stieber tech'ed St. Peter Chanel's Jeremy Walden ... In the first round. I think that's the first time I've ever seen that. The Monroeville group is down to the four champions. Cal Clark lost in a hard-fought overtime decision to Marco Gualtieri of West Jefferson. Gualtieri came back from a 4-2 deficit in the final :30, and scored a takedown for the 7-5 win about 30 seconds into the overtime. “(Cal) had a a tough one in the (quarter finals)," Eagles coach Scott Bauer said. "You’ve got to finish the match. Cal knows that. He also got popped for stalling, and that probably cost us. But it doesn’t matter, it’s in the past now." Cal came back to win his second match against Zach Hook of Nelsonville-York, a 11-4 decision. It was 4-3 in the third with a takedown, another takedown and three back points in the final seconds.
“He’s doing what he needs to do. He came back and got one, wrestled well, got a good victory there. He’ll come back tonight, and one tomorrow and be in for third, which is where we want to be.” Cam Tessari notched a first-round pin, about 1:22 into the match. Monroeville is 4-5 in the first round after Chris Phillip's first-round pin of Kirtland's Nick Zele. Huron's Nino Majoy lost an overtime decision to Kyle Kelly of Manchester. Kelly escaped from a hold with seconds left in the overtime for the 2-1 victory. Edison is 2-0 so far in the consolation rounds today. Both Kyle Burns and Cam Michel won decisions. Dylan Howard, the third Edison wrestler, has yet to go. QUARTERFINALS Division II
Oak Harbor continues to fight for second place in Division II (behind St. Paris Graham). So far they're racked up 29 team points to 27 for Lexington. SPG has ... 87.5. Bellevue's Shane Justice (135) was knocked out of the tournament after losses to Eric Wolfe of Licking Heights and Evan Storts of Springfield Shawnee. “I was pleased with the way he wrestled," Bellevue coach Paul Zolman said. "It’s the state wrestling tournament, so you’re going to see the best of the best down here. You don’t come down here expective to win matches. You come down here expecting to have to work your butt off to earn wins.” QUARTERFINALS Division I
Davion Caston has returning state champion Jerome Robinson of St. Ignatius. I'm pretty sure Ignatius is the patron saint of prep sports. Through the first two championship rounds, Sandusky is 3-1 overall, the only loss by Caston to reigning champion Robinson, Jerrel Valliant just downed Zev Green of Marysville, 10-4. St. Edward and Wadsworth are locked in a duel for first place. St. Eds has 75.5, while Wadsworth has 74. Valliant will wrestle Anthony Salupo of St. Edward. Salupo has defeated Valliant twice this season already.
