WILLARD — Bucyrus Wynford withstood a second-half New London challenge and pulled away for a 63-51 Division IV boys' basketball district semifinal win Tuesday at Willard High School.
After a slow start in which they trailed 28-16 at halftime, the Wildcats came out firing in the third quarter. New London scored 10 of the first 12 points and cut the lead to 30-26 at the 6:04 mark.
A Drew Tappel hoop knotted the game at 32-32 midway through the third, but the Royals closed the quarter with a 14-5 advantage and upped their lead to 46-37 heading into the final eight minutes.
The Wildcats cut the deficit to 52-49 with 3:44 left in the game on a Tappel three-point play, however, Wynford put the game away with free throws.
“We just got after them,” New London coach Tom Howell said. “I thought we could press them. We tried to make them take quick shots. It seems like we when we got a run, they made a couple of easy ones.”
New London ended the season 14-7 overall and 9-5 in the Firelands Conference for third place.
“My kids laid it on the line despite being outsized,” Howell said. “At the beginning of the season, we were picked fifth. I’m proud of the seniors.”
The Royals used their height to their advantage with 6-foot-1 senior Chris Brown and 6-5 senior Tyler Brause at wings and 6-3 sophomore Zach Chatlain and 6-3 senior Jon Lower at wing/post as four of the five starters.
Wynford then brought in 6-7 senior Teven Eatmon off the bench.
The Royals had a 48-28 rebounding advantage. Eatmon pulled down 14 rebounds and Brause checked in with 11 for a double-double.
“We knew that would be a factor coming in,” Howell said. “That’s their advantage and they did it well. We did the best we could with the size we have for the most part, but 6-7, 6-5, we haven’t played against that size all year.
“Their wings are 6-2, 6-3 and ours are 5-9. They took advantage of that,” he added.
Royals coach Tim Ehresman was impressed with New London.
“We weren't comfortable with a 10, 12-point lead,'' he said. “They can shoot the ball. They have three, four, five guys that can knock it down. We were fortunate to get rebounds and good offensive looks.”
New London opened with the first four points of the game, but Wynford held a 13-7 lead after the first quarter.
The Royals, led by Brause's 10 points, extended that margin.
Chatlain hit a triple as time expired to give Wynford the 12-game halftime lead.
“We talked about going out and being aggressive,” Ehresman said. “I thought we did well in the first half. That’s what basketball is — a game of runs.”
Cody Barnett led New London with 14 points, including 10 in the second 16 minutes.
After a scoreless first half, Tappel dropped in 12 second-half points. Dalton Hall and Nick Price each posted 10 points.
Barnett and Dalton Hall each hit a pair of threes, while Tappel and Clayton Hall added one apiece.
Hall had seven in the first half and Price eight in the second 16 minutes.
The Wildcats were 21-of-61 from the field and 3-of-10 from the free-throw line with just four turnovers.
Barnett also grabbed six rebounds.
“Our post guys were effective,” Ehresman said. “We were concerned with New London's quickness. I thought our guys handled their post players on the perimeter.”
Brause paced Wynford with 20 points, Chatlain scored 12 and Brown chipped in with 10.
The Royals converted 21-of-45 from the field and 10-of-23 from the charity stripe.
Wynford (15-7) is scheduled to play Carey, a 71-57 winner over Lucas Tuesday’s second semifinal game, in the district final at 7 p.m. Friday at Willard High School.
