GIBSONBURG — Ottawa Hills wore a path to the foul line in the final quarter Tuesday night to preserve a 59-41 win over Monroeville in the second boys’ basketball district semifinal at Gibsonburg High School.
The Green Bears, 21-1 overall, made 15 free throws over the final eight minutes in keeping the Eagles at bay.
The win pits Ottawa Hills against St. Paul at 7 p.m. Friday with the winner making Division IV’s Sweet 16.
The regional semifinal is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday against the Liberty-Benton district winner at Bowling Green State University’s Anderson Arena.
Ottawa Hills put the game out of reach in the third quarter when it out-scored Zac Reer’s team 15-4.
That difference allowed the Toledo area contingent to double up their opponents 42-21 with eight minutes left.
Coach John Lindsay’s team then pick and chose its course of action on the offensive end in the final quarter.
The Green Bears put the ball up just twice, making both.
Rather than risk more action shots, it waited for Monroeville to foul.
And when Monroeville did, the Green Bears converted 13-of-19 in that final quarter.
Eliot Browarsky made 11-of-15 in that quarter alone and 17-of-24 for the game. His team went 21-of-31.
“You can’t take anything away from Ottawa Hills,” Reer said. “They came out strong, guarded well and forced us into some ball-handling errors that you can not afford when playing a team of that caliber.
“But, I thought the area where we got hurt even more was on the defensive boards,” he added. “We just did not check out like we should have. They got way too many second chances.”
Monroeville ended the season at 11-12 overall.
“Take nothing from our season though,” Reer said. “It was a turn-around for the program. A huge thank you to the seniors. Those guys never quit. All the underclassmen have to do now is follow their lead and get into the gym this summer.”
The Eagles came out strong enough in the first quarter, getting back-to-back baskets from Cory Long to take a 4-0 lead.
Monroeville also did a solid job on defense, limiting Ottawa Hills to its first field goal, a turn-around jumper by Andrew Jamieson, with better than two minutes gone in the quarter.
Jamieson’s goal, though, seemed to get the Green Bears untracked. He hit again from the left corner to give the Green Bears the lead, one it would not relinquish. Ottawa Hills led 13-8 after the first quarter.
Monroeville turnovers plagued the Eagles in the first quarter (five) and again in the second (four), possessions it could ill-afford to come up dry on.
Those mistakes limited the Eagles to just seven shots in the first quarter and nine in the second.
Ottawa Hills was not doing a lot more, but enough to hold a 27-17 lead at halftime.
Then came the third period when the Green Bears defense limited Monroeville to a single field goal by Brent Bollenbacher and two free throws by Skylar Old.
Old came on with a strong final period, scoring three times from above the arc and adding a two-point goal and a free throw for 12 of his team’s 20 in the last stanza.
Monroeville was 15-of-41 from the field and 7-of-7 from the line. The Eagles cut their turnover total down to three in the final quarter, but still had 15 on the game.
Monroeville had 21 rebounds with Old and Eric Leber combing for 11. Old finished with 14 points, while Long had 10.
Browarsky led the Bears with 26 points, Jamieson netted 17 and J.J. Buckey 11.
Ottawa Hills showed 17-of-39 field goal numbers with 27 boards and seven turnovers.
