St. Mary Central Catholic got two doubles wins Monday against Sandusky, and Norwalk topped Perkins as the Panthers and Truckers won by identical 3-2 scores.

At Sandusky, Sarah May and Maria Dowarski scored a three-set win in their No. 1 doubles match to provide the final points for SMCC, winning 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 against Lexi McGuire and Hannah Sims.

The difference, first-year SMCC coach Inga Powell said, was keeping composure in the second match after butterflies in the opener.

“I think the jitters, after playing the first match, they calmed down,” Powell said. “I have such a young team with a lot of freshmen and a lot of players that haven’t played before.”

After dropping the first set, Powell said May and Dowarski played their game of tennis to take the second and the third sets.

“They play very well together, they’re very competitive,” Powell said “They can be their own worst enemies if they get down on themselves. But they can pick themselves back up. They’re very intense players.”

Armelle DeRiso was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 1 singles for SMCC against Sarah Strohl, and Makeena Myers and Colette DeRiso scored a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles against Lauren Butler and Jabrielle Nicholson.

Sandusky’s Erin Howman had a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win against Noelle DeRiso — the twin sister of Colette — and Bree Sharpe earned a 6-2, 6-3 decision against Giselle Spadaro.

At the Perkins Community Tennis Courts, Norwalk (3-1) won three singles matches as Olivia Kasten, Jaclynn Hipp and Jacquelin McCune all won by 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Kasten beat Sarah Sullivan, Hipp bested Sarah Henderly and McClune topped Kim Anglin.

“Olivia, Jaclynn, and Jacqueline were dominant on all singles courts,” Norwalk coach Chris Higgins said. “They did a superb job of keeping the ball in play. We had some very competitive matches at both doubles spots that came down to the very end.”

Perkins got a 6-7 (7-5), 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles from Lynze and Kelly Daugherty against Caleigh Ott and Allison Loden. Taylor Hayes and Jenna Goretski won their second doubles match, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 over Ashley Truxell and Elizabeth Schnee.
