Monroeville starts volleyball season with two wins; Perkins beats Bellevue

The Monroeville volleyball team opened its season Saturday with a pair of wins.
The Lady Eagles (2-0) defeated both Ontario 25-11, 25-11 and Shelby 25-20, 27-25.
In the first win, Brooke Barnett went 15-of-16 in serving with four aces and Jamie Kluding 12-of-12 and five aces.
Olivia Smith went 8-of-8 in serve receive and eight digs.
In setting, Jamie Kluding posted 14-of-14 with 10 assists and Alex Miller 9-of-9 and seven assists. Brylie Schafer led the way at the net, going 8-of-10 with seven kills and Kluding 9-of-9 and five kills.
The second match saw Schafer go 9-of-12 with three aces and Barnett 10-of-11 with two aces for the Lady Eagles.
Smith went 10-of-10 in serve reception with eight perfect and Katie Heck 7-of-7 and six perfect. Smith paced the way with 10 digs, followed by Kluding at six.
Setter Kluding went 35-of-37 with nine assists and Miller checked in at 16-of-16 with 10 assists. At the net, Kluding attained 11 kills on 17-of-18. Schafer went 14-of-15 with four kills and Heck added 12-of-13 and four kills.
Monroeville is scheduled to play Tuesday at Mapleton for its FC opener.

Perkins tops Bellevue in opener

The Perkins volleyball team opened the season with a solid three-game sweep of Bellevue to open the season Saturday morning at Perkins High School.
The Lady Pirates won the three tightly-contested games, 25-21, 25-23, 25-22.
“Bellevue was a scrappy team with aggressive hitters,” Perkins coach Beth Sage said. “We had to work hard to earn each point.”
Shannon Ebert was 37-of-39 hitting with 11 kills along with 21 assists and three blocks for Perkins, while Kendall Harris was 29-of-32 hitting with eight kills and 13 digs defensively.
Jessica Rule was 29-of-33 hitting with eight kills while Chelsea Smith added 19 digs and an ace on 13-of-13 serving. Emily Myer added 15 assists setting.
For Bellevue, Leslie Raifnsider was 25-of-28 hitting with 10 kills and eight digs while Hanna Hayes was 22 of 26 with nine kills and11 digs. Erika Jordan was 44-of-44 setting with 14 assists while Tricia Schoen was 50-of-52 setting with 11 assists and 16-of-17 serving with two aces.
“We played a good match, we were in every game, but we just made too many of our own mistakes,” Bellevue coach Karen Irons said. “We just couldn’t finish a long rally and Perkins has a nice team.”


Willard wins two
Willard downed both Seneca East and New London Saturday in a tri-match.
The Lady Flashes beat the hosts 25-21, 25-20, 25-14.
Laura Danhoff posted 11 kills and four stuffs and went 8-of-10 with four aces in serving. Alysun Daniel registered five kills and a pair of stuffs. Caroline Hamilton chipped in with six kills.
Alyssa Holmes  notched 13-of-18 with five aces.
In digs, Morgan McCormack led the way with 15, while Madison Music contributed 13. McCormack went 11-of-15 and Music 6-of-6 in serve reception.
For Willard against the Ladycats, Holmes, Music and Danhoff were all 100 percent in serve reception. Daniel went 13-of-13 at the net with four kills. Danhoff recorded four aces.
In setting, Alyssa Opatken had 10 assists and Sammy Guerra added six. McCormack paced the way with 13 digs.
“This is a good start to the season,’’ Lady Flashes coach Bridgette Knapp said. “We struggled a little on defense and on serving. We have to work on the jump serve. We just put it in this year and the girls are still getting used to it.
“It is nice to start with two wins but we still need to execute better. I think we do have good team chemistry,’’ the coach added.
Willard opens Northern Ohio League play Tuesday against visiting Tiffin Columbian.

NL splits
New London rebounded from its loss to Willard with a 27-25, 25-15 win Saturday.
Olivia Held went 14-of-16 in hitting with six kills, three blocks and 14 digs against the Lady Flashes. Michaela Brown pitched in with 9-of-13 at the net, three kills and three blocks.
Against Seneca East, Held went 26-of-33 with 14 kills and one block. Brooke Linder collected 100 percent in serve receive and also had 13 digs and three aces.
New London is scheduled to host St. Paul Tuesday for its FC opener.

Lorain 3, Western Reserve 0
Lorain topped Western Reserve 25-8, 25-11, 25-15 Saturday in non-league action.
Chrissy Garner and Kelsey Wyant were both 100 percent servers for the Lady Roughriders.
Wyant was 10-of-13 hitting with two kills and four digs. Theresa Jackson went 11-of-12 hitting with two kills and eight blocks at the net.
 “We came out extremely flat,’’ Western coach Brianne Cooper said. “We beat ourselves today with our serve reception. We’re a much better team than how we played today, and the girls know that. Not sure if it was nerves, or what, but we're going to move on from this loss and learn from it to grow as a better team.
“There were a lot of positives that tell me were moving in the right direction, but we never really got into a groove today and beat ourselves with passing,’’ the coach added. “We’ll practice hard Monday (today) and prepare for our first FC (Firelands Conference) game on Tuesday against Crestview. Hats off to Lorain though. They are a good team and picked up about everything we hit at them. They look like they mesh well between the Southview kids and Admiral King kids who have now become all one school.”

SMCC 3, SC 2
Sandusky St. Mary and South Central went the distance Saturday with the Lady Panthers prevailing 27-25, 21-25, 25-14, 25-22, 15-13.
For the Lady Trojans, Devin Sweeting went 21-of-28 in hitting with eight kills to go along with seven digs and two blocks.
At the net, Alana Chandler notched 19-of-23 with six kills and seven blocks; Cortney Oney registered 11-of-12 with four kills and 15 digs and Madison Chandler went 83-of-85 in setting with 25 assists along with 14-of-14 serving and four aces.
South Central starts FC play Tuesday at Plymouth.
