The final match of Andrew Linden's career wasn't a quick one. Not by any means.

Worthington Christian sophomore Joel Montgomery topped Linden, a senior at St. Mary CC in the first round of the Division II satte singles tournament Friday morning after a two-and-a-half-hour 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 contest.

“(Montgomery’s) a hard hitter, and he moved really well,” SMCC coach Doug Linden said. “Andrew I thought hit the ball really well... I think he really gave it his all. You can’t feel too bad once you’ve done all you can.”

The Linden-Montogmery match was the only first-round match that went all three sets in the Division II singles bracket.

“There’s not too much that’s going to make him feel good after losing a close one, but it was a great career,” Doug Linden said. “(I told him to) take it all in and learn from it and learn for the future."

Linden was third at the district tournament a week ago in Bowling Green to qualify for state. He caps his season for the Panthers with a 33-2 record. He was the Sandusky Bay Conference’s singles champion for the second year earlier this month and a Division II sectional champion.
