Edison defenders Austin Schabel (4) and Logan Parkinson bring down Monroeville running back Cory Long in Friday’s non-league football game at Edison.

MILAN — The Edison Chargers made the big plays when they counted late in the game Friday night against the Monroeville Eagles at Edison High School.
Charger senior quarterback Brandon Tomson scored on a 9-yard TD run with 4:22 left in the fourth and the Edison defense stopped Monroeville 1 yard short of a first down inside the Charger 10 with less than a minute to play, preserving a 14-9 Edison win.
“There were a lot of mistakes we made tonight,” Edison coach Jim Hall said. “We had some turnovers deep in our own territory. Our offense put our defense in bad spots a lot.
“We’ll take the win,” Hall added. “Because we’ve lost like that before and won like that before. We’ve got some film to watch and we’ll use that to build off of.”
Monroeville (1-1) led 7-0 at the half on an 8-yard TD run by senior QB Ryan Stower.
All evening, the Chargers were having trouble with turnovers, fumbling four times and losing three and also throwing an interception.
One of the Charger fumbles went out of the back of the end zone for a safety, giving the Eagles a 9-7 lead at the end of three.
Edison’s lone third-quarter highlight was when Logan Parkinson returned the second half kickoff 82 yards for a score.
The Tomson touchdown that put Edison up late capped a 96-yard drive, that featured a 59-yard run by Charger senior Kyle Matula. Matula finished the night with 118 yards on seven carries.
“I’m happy for Logan,” Hall said about Parkinson’s TD run. “He made a play that got us going.”
But with as many turnovers as Edison had, the Eagles could never take advantage.
Monroeville had three drives stall inside the Edison 10 and another inside the 20. One drive was stopped when Tomson picked off a pass at the 1.
Another the Edison defense snuffed out on a fourth-down play inside the 5.
“I don’t think they stopped us, we stopped ourselves,” Monroeville coach Dan Periat said. “We fought real hard. This is disappointing, very disappointing. We beat ourselves.”
The Eagles gained 372 total yards to 251 for Edison.
Stower finished the night 17-of-29 passing for 152 yards and one interception.
Cory Long added 96 yards rushing on 17 attempts.
“We had some big plays called back and some penalties,” Periat said. “We’ll be back. We gave great effort against a team that was bigger, stronger and faster than us.”
Periat was real proud of the defense.
“Last week we were Swiss cheese,” Periat said.
The Eagles play their first home game of the season Friday against Seneca East.
Edison (2-0) is home to Wellington.
