After losing Games 1 and 2 to Edison by a combined 29 points, there wasn't much reason to believe a three-game loss wasn't in order for the Perkins volleyball team Tuesday night at Perkins High School.

However, the Pirates played an entertaining third game and pulled out a 26-24 win before falling in the fourth game, 25-16.

The loss dropped Perkins to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the Sandusky Bay Conference while Edison improved to 2-1 overall and 2-1 in the SBC.

Edison took the first two games by scores of 25-20, 25-9.

"It's always nice to come over here and get a win," Edison coach Sean Hoover said. "We don't seem to play well over here a lot, so it was nice to come out and play well in those first two games."

The third game was a back-and-forth battle as Edison got caught in a couple rotations that struggled with serve receive and the Pirates took full advantage.

"We struggled with that off the first or second serve and we gave up a few points back and forth," Hoover said. "Game 3 was a battle. Missing a couple serves at the end there hurt us."

Edison stormed out of the gates for a 9-2 lead in Game 4, but just as quickly the Pirates came back with eight of the next 11 points to cut the margin to 13-10, prompting Hoover to call a timeout.

Kills by Kendall Harris and Shannon Ebert, along with unforced errors, helped key the Perkins run. Edison was able to recover quickly, however. Out of the timeout, the Chargers scored five straight points and seven of the next eight for a commanding 20-11 lead.

Elise Gastier kickstarted the run with a service ace and Perkins drew no closer the rest of the way.

"We have a young and inexperienced team and in those first two games especially, it really showed," Perkins coach Beth Sage said. "I thought in the third game we got some things going early and we were able to play with more confidence.

"That's something we have to get more consistent with, but in that game it was what made the difference."

Hoover said defense was the difference, not only in Game 4, but in every game.

"We got off to a good start and then let up a little bit with some unforced errors for three or four of their points," Hoover said of the fourth game. "But we got refocused and made some good plays at the net.

"Perkins is tall and athletic. This is a tough place to play, so we're just real happy to get out with a win."

For Edison, Zoe Gastier had 10 kills, 14 digs and 14 points while Abbey Cox had 14 kills, 14 digs, 13 points and four aces and Elise Gastier added 27 assists, 17 points and four aces.

Chelsea Frankboner added seven kills and five blocks while Carmen Tinnel had three kills and 10 blocks. Lauren Teed added 15 digs and Aubrey Notestine had seven.

For Perkins, Shannon Ebert was 59-of-60 setting with 10 assists while adding four blocks at the net and two service aces. Jessica Rule was 27-of-29 hitting with seven kills and nine blocks at the net while Chelsea Smith had 12 digs and two kills and Kendal Harris added seven digs and four kills.

Perkins should have won. Unfortunately they also lost against Huron. Anyway, these pictures are great - they capture the action really well. :)
