COLLINS — Western Reserve steamrolled South Central in the first quarter and never looked back.
The Roughriders mounted a 28-0 lead in the opening period en route to a 49-0 win.
With 11:56 left in the first quarter, Western started its first possession of the game. The bad news for South Central is that Western kicked off to start the game.
After a touchback on the opening kick, South Central quarterback Cody Fishbaugh lost a fumble on the first play from scrimmage. Four plays later, Western running back Blake Buckhannon scored on an 8-yard touchdown run.
A short punt, a lost fumble and an interception by South Central resulted in three Western touchdowns in four minutes to close the first quarter.
Buckhannon scored his second touchdown of the game on a 19-yard run. Darren Johnson followed with a 42-yard run. And Willie Roth closed the first half scoring for Western with a 5-yard run with six seconds left in the first quarter.
South Central appeared to have weathered the storm to start the second quarter with a 12-play drive which totaled almost eight minutes in length.
But on a 3rd-and-11, Fishbaugh was intercepted by Johnson on his second interception of the first half. Johnson returned the pick 79 yards for a touchdown, but the score was negated by an illegal block penalty.
