NANKIN — Monroeville kept its slim Firelands Conference title hopes alive, as the Eagles bested Mapleton 56-26 in league play Friday night.
Monroeville (6-2, 4-1) remains one game behind unbeaten Western Reserve (8-0, 5-0) in the FC standings with two games remaining.
The winless Mounties (0-8, 0-5) threw a scare into the Eagles early, leading 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.
But it was all Monroeville from that point on, as the visitors used a 29-6 advantage in the second period to lead 35-13 at the half.
The Eagles outscored the Mounties 14-0 in the third stanza to stretch the lead to 49-13 at the break. Mapleton had a 13-7 edge in the final frame, but it was a case of too little, too late.
“Mapleton had an outstanding game plan for us, and really played tough,” said first year Eagle head coach Dan Periat. “We didn’t play well defensively, but that was a credit to them.
“I was happy with our performance in the second half. We played with much more intensity and effort,’’ the coach added. “I thought that Ryan Stower threw the ball well, and Cory Long and Justin Jones ran it well. Jeremy Krill had a nice game on the line.’’
Both teams return to league play Friday night.
The Eagles host South Central, while the Mounties are at Crestview.
