Western runs table in FC, wins league title

NANKIN — Western Reserve clinched an undefeated regular season and the outright Firelands Conference title Friday night with a 61-10 win over Mapleton.
Not since 1984 have the Roughriders completed a 10-0 season and appeared in the postseason.
Western will have a home game when the Division V postseason starts Nov. 6.
Blake Buckhannon got the Roughriders on the scoreboard less than one minute into the game on a 53-yard run.
Mapleton drove 54 yards on 11 plays on the next drive, coming away with a 30-yard field goal by Skylar Haines.
On Western’s next drive, quarterback Kyle Pressley connected with Willie Roth for a 33- yard touchdown to make it 14-3.
 A Buckhannon interception on Mapleton’s next drive set up his next touchdown — a run of 73 yards.
The next chance the Roughriders had the ball, Western put another touchdown on the board
On a 4th-and-2 from its own 37, Western declined to punt and it paid off.
Buckhannon ripped off his third rushing touchdown of the first half on a 63 yard carry. Josh Good converted the PAT, and the Roughriders led 28-3.
Nick Zeiter added two rushing touchdowns for Western on its next two drives.
The PAT after the second score was blocked, pushing the lead to 41-3.
With two minutes to go in the first half, the Mounties scored their only touchdown of the night, as Haines caught a 27-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 41-10.
And as a result of a 46-yard run by Buckhannon and a pass interference penalty in the end zone, Western added a 30 yard field goal as the first half clock expired to give the Roughriders a 44-10 halftime lead.
Buckhannon scored his fourth rushing touchdown of the night on Western’s first drive of the third quarter. His 43-yard score and the PAT kick made it 51-10.
Buckhannon added his fifth touchdown of the night the next series on defense with a 49-yard interception return.
Good nailed his second field goal of the game, a 40-yarder, with 9:03 left in the fourth quarter to punctuate the scoring.
Buckhannon totaled 286 yards rushing on eight carries. Pressley was 8-of-13 through the air for 130 yards and one touchdown.
