What was considered a formality five weeks ago becomes official Friday for recent Sandusky graduate Xavier Turner.

The 5 p.m. deadline for 2012 MLB Draft picks to sign contracts with their respective teams came without Turner signing with the Boston Red Sox.

After turning down opportunities to be selected in the first five rounds, Turner stated on Day 2 of the draft June 5 he was instead fulfilling his scholarship to attend Vanderbilt University.

However, late on the third and final day of the draft, Boston took Turner in the 34th round as a last-ditch effort to negotiate with him for five weeks.
