Stunned, staggered and a little beaten, the Sandusky Post 83 baseball team survived Day 2 of the Ohio American Legion state tournament Tuesday in Lancaster.
Jumping out to a 16-0 lead against Wayne County, Sandusky (38-14) had to hold on for a wild 25-20 win.
Needing one more win Tuesday to be included in the final six teams of the 12-team field today, Post 83 fell behind to Strongsville 8-0 in the third inning before rallying for a 12-10 win.
After using eight pitchers in the two games, the quest to survive the loser’s bracket will continue at 10 a.m. today against Lima/Stuebenville. Should Post 83 win, it will play again at 4 p.m. in hopes of reaching the loser’s bracket final Thursday afternoon.
Against Wayne County, Logan Shullick (Norwalk 2011) had four hits, including a double, with two RBIs and three runs scored.
On the mound, Alex Manner (Bellevue) started and was pulled after two innings with the huge lead, making him available for the Strongsville game.
Trey Keegan (Sandusky) rallied the troops in the dugout, which seemed to work as Post 83 outscored Strongsville 12-2 in the last six innings. He also picked up the pitching win.
Offensively, Manner had four hits and scored four times.
