The excitement lasted until the final race.

With the boys Sandusky Bay Conference title to close to call during the 400 freestyle relay of Saturday's championship meet, 14-time league champion Perkins and Margaretta were neck-and-neck for second place in the event, and neck-and-neck for the league crown. And when the waves settled, the Pirates made it 15 SBC titles, and six straight, by edging out the Polar Bears by a 165-151 margin.

The girls title went to Perkins for the 11th straight year as senior Stephanie Gyurke, who set three new conference records, was named the meet's Most Outstanding Performer for the third time in her four years.

"It makes me really happy. I'm excited and thrilled with that honor for a third year," Gyurke said of her last-ever conference meet. "I'm sad it's over... It hasn't hit me yet. I keep thinking I'll be back next year."

It was a day of close races and record-breaking performances. In all, six meet records were broken Saturday.

Coming into the meet, no one was sure who would claim the boys title, partly because Perkins doesn't have as deep a roster as years past, opening the door for the Margarettas and Oak Harbors -- teams that had rosters to pile up points and snag the title from the Pirates.

"It's unexpected with only 10 boys. We figured the larger squads had a good chance," Perkins coach Steve Cremean said. "It was quite a competition. And the girls meet was competitive, too."

Perkins sophomore Kevin Bressler broke one meet record on his way to Most Outstanding Performer honors. His 1:02.14 in the 100 breaststroke bested the old mark of 1:02.46 by Adam Wohl (Perkins) in 2005.

"I knew this year I had to get it done (in the breaststroke). I'm good friends with Adam. It was a good race and one of my best times of the season," Bressler said. "It was a fun meet. I wasn't expecting to do that well at all. It was a close meet between us and Oak Harbor and Margaretta."

Not since Oak Harbor won the league title in 2004-05 was the boys meet this close.

"It was real nerve-racking," Bressler said. He went into the pool in the 400 freestyle relay and caught Margaretta's Jacob Stierhoff as Perkins was second (3:43.22) and Margaretta third (3:45.92). "I'm a distance guy, and I absolutely love running people down. I just went after it and it worked out fine. I knew it might come down the the last race and me having to run someone down. It worked to my advantage being an anchor. "

Bressler won the 100 freestyle (49.96), edging out Port Clinton's Josh Scott (50.57), and the Pirates won the 200 medley relay (Drew Biro, Bressler, Michael Kessler, Jonah Wikel) in 1:50.66.

"It was a solid day. We swam really well at a big meet, we raced well and gave good effort," Cremean said. "Even with the off times, the effort was there."

Gyurke set a new meet record in the 200 IM with a 2:08.88 to break her own mark of 2:10.97 from the 2010 SBC Championships at Margaretta. The senior headed to swim for Ohio University was first in the 100 butterfly (59.92).

Gyurke also anchored the 200 freestyle relay (Jillian Chapman, Sadie Ahlers, Emily Mariea, Gyurke), which won in 1:41.33 to break the old mark of 1:43.72 by Perkins in 2003.

Finally, she anchored the 400 freestyle relay (Mariea, Anglin, Beth Gyurke, Stephanie Gyurke) that won in 3:45.16. The previous record, a 3:46.56, was set in 2010 by Mariea, Camille Cremean, Anglin and Gyurke.

"It's a really good indication about where I was with training. I was sick for a couple of weeks," Gyurke said. "It was good to see what you can accomplish against a good opponent like MacKenzie (Stewart)."

Stewart, a state champion last winter in the 200 IM for Port Clinton, was second in that event (2:11.60) but won the 100 breaststroke (1:08.32)

Margaretta, second in the boys meet and fourth in the girls, set two new meet records.

At the diving competition, which began at 8:30 a.m., seniors Kori Penrod (337.20) of Perkins and Tyler Beekman (347.70) of Margaretta, both state qualifiers last year, were first for their teams. Beekman set a new SBC record, breaking the old mark of 306.50 set in 2003 by Brett Laub of Oak Harbor.

The girls 50 freestyle was a tight finish, as Margaretta senior Sydney Craig (25.10) edged out Perkins' Jillian Chapman (25.22). Both times were better than the previous conference best, a 25.28 by Monica Bressler (Perkins) in 2004. Port Clinton's Cheyenne Meek wasn't far off, with a 25.88 for third place.

Oak Harbor, with a pair of third-place finishes, was first in one event.

"The kids swam well. We had some season best swims coming off hard Christmas break session," Oak Harbor coach Andrea Sorg said. "Ian Rhodes had a great 500 (first in 5:34.17) and dropped a little bit of time. And Lindsay Cochran had a great 500 swim as well."

Kessler, also a sophomore at Perkins, was first in the 50 freestyle (23.56) and 100 butterfly (55.30).

The Pirates 200 medley relay (Anglin, Jillian Chapman, Camille Cremean, Sadie Ahlers) was first in 1:54.28, and Anglin won the 500 freestyle (5:22.44) and 100 backstroke (1:03.57).

Port Clinton's Allie Reynolds was first in the 200 freestyle (1:57.91), just missing the record 1:57.87 by Kim Routh (Perkins) in 2001, and won the 100 freestyle (54.44)

Josh Scott picked up first-place finishes for the Redskins in the 200 freestyle (1:55.72), 200 freestyle relay (Michael Long, Christain Raff, Cody Gray, Scott) in 1:34.77 and 400 freestyle relay (Long, Raff, Prosser, Scott) in 3:35.68.

Michael Long added two more firsts for P.C. with a win in the 200 IM (2:11.98) and 100 backstroke (1:01.42)

First-year Huron coach Adam Warner gave his impressions on the day.

"I think the girls did really well slipping into fifth place," Warner said. "The relays looked really nice."

Huron's relay squads are mostly sophomores.
