Western Reserve has done it again.

For the second consecutive season, the Roughriders swept the Firelands Conference track and field championships at Whitney Field, winning the girls’ meet with a score of 134 and the boys’ at 132 points.

Western’s girls’ team, leading by five points heading into the final event, the 4x400 meter relay, needed to finish third or higher to clinch the championship. They took first in the event, gaining 10 points for the win. Crestview finished second to place as the FC runner-up.

New London and Crestview finished second and third respectively on the boys’ side. Western Reserve finished the meet 26 points ahead of New London.

“We feel fortunate to have done that,” Western Reserve coach Barry Pickens said about repeating as conference champions. “It’s been a blessing.

“We’ve tried to focus in and improve all year long and keep the kids healthy. We try to prepare the best we can and the rest will take care of itself,’’ he added.

Western Reserve senior Darren Johnson broke two conference records. He established a new mark —22 feet, 5 inches—in the long jump Wednesday and broke the high jump record Friday at a height of 6 feet, 8 inches.

Johnson, the defending Division II state high jump champion, broke the 6’6” mark that won the state meet last season. Friday he was named boys most valuable field athlete and also took first place in the 200 meter dash.

Nick Zeiter of Western Reserve was named boys most valuable track athlete. He won the 110 and the 300 meter hurdles as an individual, and was part of the first-place 4x200 meter relay team and the second-place 4x100 meter relay team.

“They both have been performing well all year long and they continued to do that this week,” Pickens said of Johnson and Zeiter.

“With Darren, there is still pressure to perform but he just takes it one meet at a time. Nick, when healthy, has been able to step in and do a nice job for us and certainly he did a nice job tonight.”

Emily Mounts of Crestview earned the girls’ Most Valuable Field Athlete. She grabbed the high jump and pole vault titles and placed fifth in the long jump, totaling 22 points for the Lady Cougars.

Emily Trent also of Crestview was named the girls Most Valuable Track Athlete. She won the 800 and 1600 meter runs and was part of the first-place 4x800 meter relay team.

South Central saw three school records fall Friday: Mandy Duren (17.37) in the 300 hurdles, Jake Rhine (2:00.56) in the 800 and the 4x200 meter relay team of Pilar Cabello, Kevin Keener, Dakota Kinney and Jake Rhine (1:35.74).
