A slow start wasn't enough to cost the Sandusky American Legion Post 83 baseball team.

Trailing Toledo Post 335 by a 4-0 score through two innings Tuesday night at Perkins High School, Post 83 broke out the bats for eight runs in the fourth and fifth innings to claim a 8-5 win.

Post 83 improved to 5-2 entering today's 7:30 p.m. game at Findlay Post 3.

"It was good to see we didn't roll over and kept battling," said Post 83 associate head coach Mike Shepherd. "It's always good to get a win, but we could have played a little better. We need to come out with a little more energy at the start to play to our full potential."

Trey Keegan (Sandusky) started for Post 83 and allowed four runs (three earned) in the first two innings on four hits and two walks. But he settled in for a scoreless third and fourth, allowing just one baserunner while striking out three in the two frames.

That allowed the offense to take over in the bottom of the fourth.

Cory Brown (Port Clinton 2010) opened with an infield single, and advanced to second on a throw about 6 or 7 feet over the first baseman's head. Two batters later, Kyle Fluharty (Willard) hit an RBI triple to score Brown for the team's first run. Shayne Blevins (Sandusky) hit an RBI single to score Fluharty to make it 4-2.

Derek Coston (Port Clinton) walked and Seth Bryant (Perkins) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then Tyler Mees (Perkins) drew a walk to drive in another run that made it 4-3.

Mike Drake (Sandusky) delivered the big blow on the ensuing at-bat, hitting a two-run double to give Post 83 a 5-4 lead.

In the fifth, Blevins added another RBI single and Keegan hit a two-run single to give the team an 8-4 lead.

The pitching did the rest.
