A little chance at some early revenge came to fruition for the Sandusky American Legion Post 83 baseball team Saturday afternoon at Day 2 of the 'Nubbs' Shootout.
A week ago on June 4, Post 83 was swept in a doubleheader at Whitehouse Post 384 while being outscored 20-9 in the two losses.
But at Perkins High School Saturday, Post 83 turned the tables for a 7-6 win over Whitehouse to improve to 9-2 overall, and 3-0 in the tournament entering today's final two games.
Post 83 beat Avon Lake Post 211 earlier Saturday, 9-7. The team is 4-0 against 5th district opponents in the early going, and has won six straight games overall.
Trailing Whitehouse entering the bottom of the third inning, 1-0, Post 83 plated five runs in the bottom half to take the lead for good.
Logan Shullick (Norwalk), Cory Brown (Port Clinton 2010) and Trey Keegan (Sandusky) all had singles in the inning. Shayne Blevins (Sandusky) drove in a pair on a single, and Brady Smith (Sandusky) added an RBI single.
After Whitehouse touched Robert Fravel (Port Clinton) for three runs in the top of the fourth to close within 5-4, Post 83 came back with an RBI single from Keegan in the bottom half of the inning for a 6-4 lead.
Whitehouse added a run in the top of the fifth to make it a 6-5 deficit, but Post 83 got what proved to be a big insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Brown hit an RBI single to make it 7-5.
Derek Colston (Port Clinton) pitched a scoreless and hitless sixth, and Smith came on to close it out in the seventh.
In the win over Avon Lake, Brown was touched for six runs in the first couple innings. However, the offense found it's stride and Evan Laser threw 5 2/3 solid innings of relief to get the win.
Laser allowed two runs on three hits while striking out two and walking two. He was able to save some arms, however, in recovering to pitch the rest of the game in relief of Brown.
In the two games, Shullick, the Division II District Player of the Year this past spring for the Truckers, finished 5 for 6 with six runs scored and an RBI. He reached base seven times in the leadoff spot in the two games.
