Oak Harbor graduate J.D. Bergman was named by USA wrestling the 2010 John Smith Award winner as the freestyle wrestler of the year.

Bergman, a two-time state champion for the Rockets before wrestling for Ohio State, was 10th at the 2010 World Championships in Moscow at 96 kg.

Bergman was a three-time All-American, finishing second in 2008 to Northwestern's Dustin Fox (of Galion) at 285 in the second sudden victory period, 4-2, of the championship finals.

Bergman won gold at the Cerro Pelado International in Cuba and the New York AC international in 2010.

Bergman won state championships at 189 pounds for Oak Harbor in 2002 and 2003, his junior and senior years. He won his first by pinning Jesse Sydebotham (Columbus Hamilton Township) in 2:45. He defeated St. Paris Graham's Joe Hoke in the 2003 state title match, 7-1.

Past winners include Cael Sanderson (twice), the current head coach at Penn State, and John Smith, four-time world champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist and coach at Oklahoma State.
