BOYS GOLF
- Willard advances: The Crimson Flashes will move on to the next round after taking second at the Huron sectional at Sawmill Creek Golf Course. Bellevue's Justin Schoen and Margaretta's Derek Kuns, as well as Huron's Keegan Bollenbacher and Bo Pettegrew advance to the district tournament. In Division III, St. Paul junior Chris Stang will also move on to districts.
VOLLEYBALL
- Huron 3, Perkins 1: Huron coach Don Wood won career match No. 400 Thursday as the Tigers defeated Perkins in four sets. His 19-season coaching career includes 13 Sandusky Bay Conference titles, six state tournament appearances and three state championships. Current Huron athletic director Monica Mansor played for Wood in the mid-90s. “I respected him tremendously as a player,” Mansor said, “and now that I’m in the role of (athletic director), I see all of the work, all of the things behind the scenes, the amount of work and effort he puts into his teams and job, and I have even more respect than I ever did before.”
- Edison 3, Oak Harbor 0: Edison took another step toward the SBC title with a big victory over the Rockets Thursday in Oak Harbor, holding the hosts to just 27 points total. The Chargers improve to 13-1 (10-0 SBC) with the win, while Huron and Margaretta have two SBC losses apiece.
- Monroeville 3, Western Reserve 0: Monroeville kept pace atop the Firelands Conference with a 25-13, 25-8, 25-13 win over Western Reserve. The Eagles, ranked No. 7 in the latest coaches poll, was led by Jamie Kluding with 17 kills. St. Paul (11-2, 9-1) is still within reach of Monroeville in the Firelands conference.
- Columbian 3, Bellevue 2: The Tornadoes and Lady Red traded sets Thursday in a five-match victory for Columbian. Leslie Raifsnider had 13 kills, six blocks and 16 digs.
BOYS SOCCER
- Huron 2, Perkins 1: At Perkins, John Dusza scored the game-winner for the Tigers with four minutes remaining in a tied Sandusky Bay Conference matchup to improve Huron’s record to 7-4 (4-3 SBC). Tremayne Lemar scored first for the Tigers, two minutes into the game and Huron held onto the lead until Tony Genter scored for the Pirates with 11 minutes remaining.
- Oak Harbor 2, Edison 1: Zach Davis scored the lone goal for the Chargers off assists from Alec Spriggs and Mitch Unger. Davis’ goal tied the match with 20 minutes remaining in the game, but the Rockets put one in the six minutes left to win the game.
