There are only two weeks remaining in the high school football regular season, but it is again looking like our area will have a strong representation in the OHSAA playoffs in three weeks, including up to three teams in one region.
Below is a look at who is in great shape and others who need to win out and get some help:
Division III, Region 10
Up to four area teams are still alive for the playoffs in this region, but two of them appear to have just about locked down not only a spot in the top eight but quite possibly a first round home game. The Bellevue Redmen (7-1) sit in great shape at this point as they sit in 2nd and have all but clinched a playoff spot. However, after what should be a victory against Willard (1-7) this week, the Redmen host Tiffin Columbian (6-2) who is ranked 9th in the region, in the season finale and a loss to the Tornadoes could possibly knock Bellevue out of a home game.
The Clyde Fliers (7-1) are currently ranked 4th in the region and also appear to be in good standing with a spot all but locked down, but with Perkins (6-2) on the road this week, Clyde is either going to possibly clinch a spot and home game or lose out on a home game with a loss...and possibly a playoff spot depending on what other teams possibly do.
Two other teams that realistically 'have a shot' in the region include the Vermilion Sailors (4-4) and the Perkins Pirates (6-2). Vermilion beat a 5-win Division II team last week (North Ridgeville) and benefited from other teams in front of them losing, as they jumped from 15th to 11th. With a pair of 2-5 teams left on the schedule, all the Sailors can do is win both, hope for other teams to lose and see where their secondary points put them to see if it will be enough or not.
Perkins is in a similar situation, but faces a taller task in sitting in 13th and having to leap five teams to sneak in...a win over Clyde this week will do wonders, but like the Sailors a lot would still have to fall into place for the Pirates to get in as the loss in the final minute to Huron this past week will be the one that put the team out of contention if they do not get in.
Division IV, Region 14
With a thrilling win over a 6-1 Perkins (Division III), the Huron Tigers (6-2) have improved from the 8th and final spot in the region up to 5th. With Oak Harbor (2-6) and Margaretta (3-5) left on the schedule, Huron should be in barring any upsets but have virtually no shot of somehow moving up into the top half of the region and host a first round game.
Meanwhile, the Edison Chargers (5-3) are technically 'still alive' in the 13th spot, but with Margaretta and St. Mary Central Catholic (0-8) left on the schedule, the Chargers may find themselves 7-3 and probably 10th or 11th in the region to miss out. Looking back, Edison needed one of the three SBC losses to Clyde, Huron or Perkins back.
Division V, Region 18
Entering last weekend at 6-1 and hosting unbeaten St. Paul, most observers and fans expected the Western Reserve Roughriders (6-2) to lose and tumble from 7th to the outside looking in for a playoff spot in this region, and that is exactly how it played out as Western has fallen to 10th. However, not all is lost, as the team travels to Crestview (7-1) this week and the Cougars are ranked right in front of them in the region in the 9th slot. A win will obviously put WR at least into 9th heading into the final week of the season, but no matter the case the 'Riders need to win both games and hope when it is sorted out they have enough secondary help to get in.
Division VI, Region 21
After the 55-13 rout of Western Reserve, the St. Paul Flyers (8-0) have unofficially clinched its sixth consecutive playoff spot and moved up to 2nd in the region. Assuming the team wins the final two games against New London (5-3) and Monroeville (1-7) the Flyers hosting a playoff game in three weeks is nothing more but a formality at this point.
