Edison's third win in four games put them back at the .500 mark this year after a 50-15 victory Saturday against St. Mary CC.
TURNING POINT: The first of four SMCC turnovers late in the second quarter allowed Edison to take a 23-0 lead at halftime instead of a 16-0 margin.
Zach Rutherford had just scored with 1:18 left in the quarter, and the Panthers put the ball on the ground on a bad exchange between Alex Guerra and running back Brandon Green. The Chargers recovered, and ran six plays to go 20 yards, capped by Rutherford's 1-yard plunge.
STAT OF THE GAME: Seven and four, as in seven SMCC fumbles in the game, four of which Edison recovered to turn into 28 points.
The tunovers were all deep in Panthers territory, too, as the Chargers drove 20, 30, 31, and 2 yards to touchdowns — that's a total of 83 yards on four scoring drives.
BEST PLAYER IN THE GAME: For the first quarter and most of the second Gerbracht looked like th best player after gaining 77 yards on his first five carries and scoring once. But, as the Panthers took away that part of the option offense, Rutherford came on to score three straight TDs in the second and third quarters. He had 100 yards on 14 carries.
BEST CALL: The option offense produced 293 yards on the ground for Edison, 76 from QB Tommy Gerbracht and 100 from Rutherford. The Chargers also gashed SMCC for big gains, breaking runs for 49, 36, 28 and 26 yards, and kept the chains moving; Edison punted only twice.
NEXT WEEK: Edison (4-4, 3-1 SBC) vs. Clyde (6-2, 5-0 SBC); SMCC (3-5, 1-4 SBC) vs. Oak Harbor (4-4, 3-2 SBC).
