St. Paul answered the bell in Thursday's Division IV district volleyball championship match against rival Monroeville.
The Lady Flyers landed their own punches, took several from the Eagles and ultimately survived in four games, 25-13, 25-20, 15-25, 25-22, at Willard High School to advance to the Elida regional. St. Paul (20-5) continued its district dominance with the win, advancing to the regionals for the ninth time in the previous 10 seasons.
St. Paul (No. 9, Div. IV) will take on Defiance Ayersville (18-3) at 6 p.m. Thursday at Elida High School. The other side of the bracket will feature Mohawk (23-2) vs. Convoy Crestview (21-3). Mohawk (No. 14) knocked off New Riegel (No. 7) while Crestview (No. 11) upset previously unbeaten Leipsic (No. 3) in five to advance.
"We came out strong and we flattened out, but winning a fight like that never gets old," St. Paul coach Nancy Miller said. "That one was just as awesome as the first time we ever won the district here. I thought the girls fought awesome.
"I told the girls I was so proud of the way they fought, and to win a match like that is why we're going to regionals."
