Gillett named SBC's top player

Alex Gillett became the first player in the Sandusky Bay Conferenece to win back-to-back Most Outstanding Performer awards in football voting.

Gillett, who became the first junior to win the MOP award in 2007, was a first-team all-league unanimous selection for the second straight year after leading the league in rushing with 1,455 yards rushing for 27 touchdowns in the regular season.

He also threw for 1,414 yards and 13 touchdowns on 97-for-157 passing.

The Fliers won their second straight outright SBC title with a 7-0 record in the league behind Gillett, who was the Division III Co-Offensive Player of the Year for 2007 and a unanimous pick as a first-team defensive back. The school had eight first-team spots.

Gillett's favorite target was tight end Kyle Smetzler, who earned a first-team spot ater catching 25 passes for 395 yards and six touchdowns. Perkins' Tyler Dix, who nabbed 41 catches for 729 yards and eight TDs and Huron's Matt Lehrer, who caught 22 passes for 399 yards and five scores, were the first-team picks at wideout.

Flier running back Kade Kramer had 945 yards and nine TDs to claim a spot at running back, Huron's Craig Thorne ran for 1,063 yards and 12 scores and Edison's Dylan Howard gained 1,117 yards and 12 scores to take the other two first-team spots in the backfield.

Center Tyler Owens of Perkins, guards David Weiss of Clyde and Matt Likes of Huron and tackles Jarad Branski of Clyde and Anthony Quinn of Huron were first-team linemen.

Defensively, Branski, Gillett, Dix and Lehrer also earned first-team spots, with the latter three all taking defensive back spots. Branksi was a first-team lineman.

Perkins' Michael Jordan and Huron's Cameron Fulford and Chris Chicotel were the other first-team choices in the trenches.

Clyde's Drew Beebe, Huron's Andrew Fantozzi, Perkins' Nico Caponi and Margretta's Evan Kurt were the top picks at linebacker.

Margaretta's Jed Cullen joined Gillett, Dix and Lehrer in the first-team secondary and Dix was a unanimous pick as the specialty player.

Aside from Gillett, Dix, Thorne, Weiss, Likes and Branksi were unanimous picks on offense, and Kurt was a unanimous pick on defense.
