Calm before the storm

It seems really odd this week. And no, it's not because we're not putting out a Fandy.com Magazine this week.

It's because there's no more fall sports, and winter sports haven't begun yet.

With St. Paul losing to Bascom Hopewell-Loudon last Friday, so ends the fall prep season for 2008.

Girls basketball will begin on Friday, Nov. 30, followed by boys basketball and (my personal favorite) wrestling the following Friday.

So, what does a sports staff do?

Well, for starters, we're all starting to work on our winter sports previews. With the lull, it makes it easier to have the time to get a jump on some of these items.

I can remember a few years ago at my other paper, where we were not only working winter previews, but also the fall all-star teams/players of the year AT THE SAME TIME! That was terrible. Both items lacked as a result, because we were rushing through the both of them just to get them done.

Even though I was looking forward to covering a state championship game, I am a bit relieved that fall sports is over. It makes planning for the winter a bit easier.

Plus, in case you haven't heard, hoops fans will get a taste of the regular season to come this Friday and (especially) next Wednesday with the OHSAA foundation games. We are trying to get the three area games covered on Friday night, and, despite having to be done with the paper at 7 p.m. next Wednesday evening, we will still cover the Sandusky-Perkins extraveganza.

In fact, you can expect a story a day leading up to the historic game. Hey, this is the SANDUSKY Register. I hope you wouldn't expect anything less from our sports department.

As for me, I'm looking forward to finishing up the wrestling preview and doing my best to cover the season-opening Walsh Jesuit Ironman Tournament. With a lot of local flavor there, especially the Monroeville "Fearsome Foursome," it should be a great tournament for wrestling fans.
