Pretty Good ?!?
I've never heard them, but I understand they are VERY good ! Size usually does matter with a marching band, and Edison puts alot of marchers on the field. For the small schools, Norwalk St. Paul has that great all-brass sound and they are very good.

Not so much
I've chanced seeing most of the bands in the area. Perkins has, without a doubt, the best band in the area. They aren't just big, but they are good. I think Huron is second, followed by Port Clinton. Huron seems to get bigger and better every year, and they always sound good. Edison is big, but they are just loud and not very good. Half of the band members arent even playing except for the drums. PC seems to get better every year to. Big bands don't mean good bands. We have lots of good small bands in this part of ohio. Haven't seen Sandusky band in a long time, but they always used to be good. GO FLIERS!

Perkins Band is one of the best in Ohio
I admit to being somewhat prejudiced as we live in Perkins Township, but we think this is one of the best repesentatives of good old fashioned hard work and gumption and dedication! Good life lessons too, how to stick to it, competiveness, good sportsmanship, etc. GO PERKINS!!!! ST

Edison
I find it hard to compare many of the bands in the area together. Edison has a different style than Perkins does. While many schools are competition bands, Edison is a show band. They each have different ways of doing things and they appeal to different types of people because of that. Personally, I feel Edison has the best band, but that is my opinion and I show some favortism because I used to be in it. Quantity of students does not matter as much as the quality of their performance as a musician. Perkins also has a good band and I like them as well, but again they have a different style than Edison.

Perkins does the same thing week in and week out. I agree with Edison. Show me a band that gets after it and I'll show you a half time crowd getting into it.

Edison is loud. Perkins is good. There's a big difference. Also, bands aren't playing their friday nights to compete, so why are we ranking them? Perkins is the only bandi n the area that goes to legitimate band contests anyhow, and they win.

yes, but....
You are right, Perkins does go to competitions and they do win. Edison is a different type of band and they are not made to compete in competitions like Perkins does. Edison is also loud, you are right about that also. The difference I am seeing is that Perkins does the same show all season long, whereas Edison does a new routine every home game. In some cases, that means the band members must learn a new show in one week, songs included. I am not sure if you were in band yourself ever, but I have been in those shoes and it is rough. I am not saying that Perkins members do not have a tough time with their routines, but to learn an entire new show in one week is extremely difficult. Like I said in my original posting, it is difficult to compare the 2 beacuse they are so differnt, but in good ways.

oh yeah i totally agree because i play for the margaretta band it doesn't matter how big the band is and it doesn't matter how small it is. and you can play loud and sound great. this year since we got a new director everyone is saying how much better of a band we have and we only have what..........maybe 75 players in the band.

Nascar...
Nascar, I tend to agree with you on a lot of these forums... however, every year everyone says how much better of a band Margaretta has... the fact is... Margaretta will never have a strong band until they can keep one director there for a long period of time. Same with choir. I was in the Margaretta band and choir at one time and throughout my time there the band directors changed from: Mr.Angelo, to Mrs.Schmenk, to Mr.Smith, to Mr.Meadows, to whoever the new person is.... and the choir directors went from Mr.Shadel, to Mr.Meadows, to Mrs.Cole, to whoever the new person is. Mr.Meadows did a great job with the band while he was there considering what he had to work with.

No matter what type the band is, they should still sound good. Perkins music and routines is WAY harder than what Edison does and that is why they do one show all season. Port Clinton does many shows per season, and they still sound and look good. That is the difference. Quality not quantity shouldbe what is important.

Best Bands
I would agree that Edison has a great band for a show band. This has been their style for a number of years. I don't know for certain that a new routine is learned for every home game since I don't know what type of schedule the band follows during the week. Perkins band is strictly a competition band. Yes, they play the same songs each week and do the same show each week. They do a corps-style of marching and their presentation of song order is the same each year. For my money, I enjoy this show in that my eyes can easily follow the transition from one form to another as well as the smooth transitions between musical numbers. However, both bands suffer in the area of repetition. As a student from the 70's, I watched a number of Edison shows and frankly, once a band drummer has played while standing on his head, does it need to be repeated over and over and over again? Likewise, does the Perkins band always have to lead out with a number reflecting a latin theme? I will say that I am looking forward to seeing EHS band this year as I have only seen them perform under Mr. Georgiafandis (Yes, he was there when I was in high school and my kids are now in college!!!). Besides marching band, we should really look at the wind ensembles, concert bands, show bands, jazz bands, etc. In this arena, the PHS band has it all over others!!! If you can ever get to a concert (check the district website's calendar), you will be stunned at the incredibly difficult pieces both their concert band and wind ensemble tackle. In addition, the directors give a brief explanation of special numbers the band performs. Again, these bands go to state competition and receive 1 or 2 consistently. Also, the band members submit audition tapes for district band band is nearly 1/3 PHS members. Several members play at universities throughout OH as they submit audition tapes for the purpose of playing in an honors band. This year, the band will travel to BGSU in January as one of the showcase bands for a conference (I believe). As for football halftime performances, choose your style and enjoy. For your listening interest, I urge you to check out the winter performances of PHS and EHS. You will find spectacular performances in both venues.

OMG! What has happened to
OMG! What has happened to Western Reserve's Band?? They are so small now and are boring. Boring music, boring drills, etc. And the director is completely unapproachable-who does she think she is? Sad. Bet that school board has more regrets then they'll admit to.

I can tell you what happed to westerns band! the previous director McGue? ran that program into the ground... when she took over the program had 70 kids it then went to 18... I saw them play at some games and even the contest at rittman... the old director had them playing disney tunes at a 6th grade level. I think your confusion is that they are not a "show" band but a corps style band. From what I have heard the board is very pleased, the new students entering the program now actually read music, which differs from the old person. I am not real sure why u think the new person is unapproachable? I see people talking to her all the time.

Nice try, Ms. Jacobs
I looked at this bio and know that the present director wrote it (although I think you are older than you say!!) I am going to speak from experience, because I was in the WR band. Mrs. McGue was the most caring teacher at the school and we definitely did not play 6th grade music. The on ly year we played Disney songs was when we were going on our trip to Disney, and they were high school arrangements! We all knew how to read music, and even write it. We played music that challenged us. She knew all of her instruments, how to play them, what the fingerings were for all of them etc. She came into a bad situation and gave us our band back. Her numbers grew every year, despite the block scheduling, the sports schedules, and the many other obstacles we had to overcome. The numbers were never 70 in the years before she came. There were about 25 when she first came, and were never as low as 18. BTW, how many do YOU HAVE NOW??. We played music that was AT LEAST rated a 3 (that was the lowest), and oftentimes a 3.5 or 4. She stayed after for no pay to do extras like jazz band, music theory, give lessons, or just listen to our problems. We learned five shows every marching season. And, by the way, never marched in Rittman's band show, so you must be mistaking them for someone else. You may be bitter because so many people quit when she left, but don't bash her and blame her. And, I did try to talk to you, as did my parents, and others. You are not approachable and don't listen. Then when we would see you you would look the other way. So prove yourself and stop bashing others for your problems.

edison, all the way
i would have to say edison has the greatest band in the SBC. they learn a new show for every home game, if they repeat a show--its only twice. they go to band shows almost every saturday during the football season excluding homecoming weekend, and they do a hand full of parades. Edison has a style like no one around. Perkins has a great band, but they also do the same show every week. Four songs, same drills. how exciting is that?! i wouldnt want to watch the same every week would you? Edison every friday has a fun dance routine that everyone seems to enjoy and look forward too. although i do agree with the other people, its quality over quantity, but they deffinatley have both. after getting a new band director this year after 36 years with Mr. Georgiafandis, Mrs. Reilly has filled his shoes quite well. There hasnt been one fan left dissappointed. For those of you who think Edison isnt so great.....why did they travel all the way to ft myers, flordia to march in one of the biggest festival parades down there [[edison festival of lights]]?????

HMMMM....
Every fan has their own style of entertainment. What you like is not for all and what others like is not your style. I marched in a band with a similar style to Edison many years ago. I, too, felt that the style was the only way to keep the fans excited. So, imagine how I first felt when I saw PHS perform. Well, it didn't take me too long to determine that the style performed by PHS was also captivating. Why? It had to be the precision and the way in which the music was performed. Dynamics, the way the drill evolves rather than pops, and the crisp movements all bring together a style that is pleasant for both ears and eyes. I think there is room for both styles and to compare them is like comparing apples to oranges. Finally, I would also think that your invitation to the festival parade not only had to do with your abillities, but how many "Edison" bands can there be to march in a parade to honor a truly great inventor?

True, Edison may do a new
True, Edison may do a new show every week, but PHS does music that is way more hard. In my opinion, Edison is sloppy and there shows look like a riot on the field. Ohio State has a GREAt marching band, but you don't see them running around on the field like crazy. I don't know about you, but groups that are disciplined and sound good are what I want to hear. Not who has the best gimmick of the week. No disrespect meant to the Edison kids....but everyone says that they are the best band, when they simply are not even close. Last of all, bands in the SBC don't compete with each other and each one has a different mission. Like or not, HS bands aren't around for entertainment only. The primary purpose to educate the kids in the band...when you look at edison, they have 20 kids at least not playing. I haven't seen either band this year, but I would assume it's just going to be more of the same. I think you're defeating the purpose of high school bands by even having a forum like this.

Well lets see.... first off, the band doesn't run around like crazy on the field. Every kid knows there assigned spot to go to. Second, ALL the kids in the band practice real hard to put on the shows they do. And finally, third, ALL the Edison band members play at the same time. Everybody was out there playing and having fun, and how can you tell if they weren't playing from the stands>_<

Band Shows vs. band competitions
Edison participates in band shows while Perkins participates in band competitions. The competitions determine what marching bands will go to the state competition as some of the best bands in Ohio. Since there is no similarity in the two, let's address another topic concerning bands like open practices (PHS on Thursday nights).

Apples to Oranges
Perkins : Edison :: apples : oranges I'm taking a risk and telling you straight out: I'm in the Perkins band. However, that doesn't mean I can't respect the Edison band. Fall Fanatic more or less nailed this one; we're two separate styles, performing two types of shows. I respect Edison for their hard work and enthusiasm. It obviously isn't easy to learn a completely new show every week. But allow me to pull back the curtain so you can get a glimpse of the Perkins band. Our shows are hard. Yes, we do the same one week in and week out, but try to understand. It's really hard. The music, the marching, everything is so complicated. We feel that if we focus on one show, it will be the best. Our competitions so far have proved that we can be the best. (That doesn't mean Edison is necessarily bad, but they are different.) We do our best to put on a quality show with the best marching and music we can, which would require us to do the same show weekly. Sorry if it bores you, but that's the tradition of our program. As far as music goes, I'm sorry, I know I'm asking for it, but ours is simply better. I think this is because we play it until its perfect. I mean, come on, we're dedicating August until November to fifteen minutes of drill; it'd better be good. We are also much less concerned about what the crowd thinks of our show (sorry, its true) and more about our sound and marching style. One other thing: If you want to argue about band size, know it really isn't important in determining the quality of the band, but for the record, Perkins is larger than Edison. October 5th, it’s goin' down!

RE: Apples to Oranges
i agree with a lot of people saying that they play different shows. Edison is NOT a core band, so therefore, we dont exactly play the music like perkins, but i think Edisons got more showmanship. Perkins is the best in their type of competiton, and Edison is the best in theirs. PROBLEM SOLVED

Maumee Band competition
Perkins High School Marching Band went to Maumee today for the season's first competition event. For newcomers, marching bands apply to competition shows held by host high schools with the goal of achieving a rating of 1. Schools may enter any number of competitions, but the goal is to get a 1 as that means you are going to the state competition. Although the show was not flawless, the band uses this competition to pick apart and improve for the next competition. However, much to their surprise, the band earned a 1! Although they could not celebrate with the other bands at the competition (we had the SMCC game to return to ), there was much excitement. For those who have never attended a competition event, I would like to suggest the North Coast Competition. This event is held Saturday, October 13th at the Perkins stadium. There are 14 bands guaranteed (more likely) to entertain you from afternoon through evening. The cost, I believe, is $6 and you will be stamped should you want to leave and return (unlike football games). Don't worry that you don't know what to look for; buy a program and read the helpful hints offered by Mr. John Kustec. There is plenty of food and drink...all reasonably priced. Awards and trophies are presented at the conclusion of the event. What a great way to spend a fall day!!!

Edison!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, i may be being a little biased because i go to edison, but im an honest person and im going to tell you the truth. Perkins is boring they do the same exact show yeah i understand they go to state competitions, well just to inform all of you edison isnt a competition band its a SHOW BAND! And as for the other bands out there and for all of you that say the edison band is "too loud" and "a riot on the feild" at least we have fun with what we do. When i go to football games and march on the feild i can do it with a smile on my face and i can say that i had fun unlike other people form other bands i've talked to they say i wish we could march like you! you guys are so awsome, and the key phrase they say is You guys look like you have so much fun. marching band isnt supposed to be unenjoyable its about having fun and doing something you love to do.

Music??
If it's just about the volume, then you're not making music; you are making noise. As for being a "show" band, what does the "Chicken Dance" have to do with a MARCHING BAND show? I won't disagree with your opening statement. However, both of the areas I commented on indicate a lack of discipline on the part of the band and its director. It takes discipline to roll step, hit your spots on the field to make perfect formations and drills, and to play music as it should be played. Surely, your band knows the small letters that appear under the staffs are to indicate how loud or soft you should be playing?? Tell you what, I think if Perkins wanted to do your show, they could. But for Edison to attempt a show of Perkins......you GOTTA be KIDDING!!!

Music
dude, they do the chicken dance to have fun, its a funny little dance that can get people to be a LITTLE LOOSEND UP after the first half of a game that their team might be losing in. maybe perkins should do some music like Edison does. I know Edison can do a Perkins show, so before anyone disses edison OR perkins, have them do each others shows and see if they are as good as they say. "Edison can do a perkins band, we just dont want to." or "perkins can do an edison show easily." do it then, then make comments.
