The Ohio State Buckeyes did their part of beating Michigan and earning a co-championship in the Big Ten with Penn State.
The Buckeyes, though, won’t be going to the Rose Bowl, because of the Nittany Lions’ 13-6 win over OSU Oct. 25.
But OSU has put itself in position for a fourth-straight BCS bowl, based on what happened over the weekend.
Oregon State took itself out of the running for the Rose Bowl with a loss to Oregon. That put USC in line for that spot with a win over UCLA.
Where does that leave OSU?
I keep coming back to the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Ariz. at 8 p.m. Jan. 5.
There might be some hesitation of putting the Buckeyes back in Arizona, but the Fiesta Bowl gets the first pick over both the Sugar and Orange Bowls and they know OSU is always attractive as a team because of a solid fan base that will travel.
The Buckeyes are ranked 10th in the BCS standings — the highest of the two-loss teams.
Who would OSU play? I'm going with Texas, which was left out of the Big 12 championship game because Oklahoma had a higher BCS ranking. The Longhorns have a right to be ticked off, considering they beat the Sooners in the regular-season meeting. The BIg 12 needs a better way of breaking ties.
There’s going to be some good teams left out of the BCS picture.
Texas Tech, with just one loss, is one of those teams. Undefeated Ball State is another, as is unbeaten Boise State.
I don’t agree with leaving a unbeaten team out of the BCS.
Can a Boise State or Ball State hang with a Florida or Alabama? Probably not, but let’s find out.
Remember, the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. Boise State wasn’t supposed to hang with Oklahoma, but gained a 43-42 overtime win in one of the best college football games in history.
This mess will fortunately come to a conclusion Sunday when the BCS standings are listed for the final time this season, although the picture is much clearer this season.
