the ohio high school athletic association has just decided to go to two divisions for high school boys swimming, just like it already does for girls. and all i can say is about time.
i understand some concerns because making the podium in one division means you are truly one of the top eight swimmers in the state in that particular event.
having said that, this is great news for high school swimming. there are some really remarkable swim programs around the state, like the one at cincinnati st. xavier, but the simple truth is most programs have no chance against these powerhouse swim programs. the district meet is pretty much the end of the line for the majority of our male swimmers in the area, so this decision lets them realistically dream about a trip to canton.
perkins has a womderful and talented boys program and scored 18 points at the last state meet. that's pretty darn good considering the field, but 18 points also left them in tied for 28th place.
maybe the same group of pirates can bring home a state title in this new line-up, which would be amazing (just ask the perkins boys track team). whether they can do that or not remains to be seen, but what will happen is so many more swimmers from our area (and across the state) will actually have a chance to experience the thrill of swimming in canton. and that's a very good thing.
and while there will be some who say it waters down the competition, a good time is a good time regardless of the division.
