Bravard — formerly of Perkins — wins ACC honor

Cierra Bravard (Perkins) of Florida State was named rookie of the week in the Atlantic Coast Conference. She averaged 13.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game as a reserve in leading the Seminoles to three victories.

Florida State extended its winning streak to five games with an 80-54 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Clemson on Sunday Bravard added 17 points.

The Seminoles (14-4, 2-0), who opened the season ranked No. 21, made a strong case for a return to the national rankings with their third victory in six days. Since pushing No. 1 Connecticut in an 83-71 loss, Florida State has won at LSU and defeated No. 3 Texas A&M to begin last week.

 

WRESTLING

- Freshman Michael Baxter (Perkins) went 2-2 at the National Wrestling Coaches Assocciation/Cliff Keen Duals Jan. 10-11 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Baxter, who wrestles at 133 pounds, opened with a 10-9 decision over Kelly Janke of Minnesota State Moorhead before losing by technical fall to Cody Garcia of top-ranked Nebraska-Omaha. Baxter came back and pinned Ryan Zavala of Chadron St. in 4:08, and suffered a 10-3 decision to Trevor Franklin of upper Iowa.

Baxter is 18-10 on the season for Mercyhurst, which will wrestle for seventh place Sunday.

 

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Freshman forward Kelsey Williams (Sandusky) scored 10 points and added a team-high eight rebounds -- three offensive -- on Saturday to lift California University of Pennsylvania to 55-53 victory over Cheyney University.
