The first time St. Mary Central Catholic girls basketball coach Becky Babione saw senior Lindsay Kaatz after taking the job in the spring, she was struck by one thing.

“She was playing with a high level of intensity and gave everything she had,” Babione said. “The first thing I remember about her was how hard she went about playing the game, and that made me excited to want to coach her.”

The first viewing of Kaatz for Babione also happened to be just an open-gym shootaround. But the school’s all-time leading scorer was treating it like a game.

“I hate to lose. It’s really a good thing, because it helps me to push myself when we’re down or if I’m struggling,” Kaatz said. “I just like to push myself to the next limit.

“I get frustrated if we’re losing. I think it helps me work better as an athlete because my teammates get more competitive, too.”
