You’re a high school baseball coach.
It’s coming down to the end of the season. You’ve been backed up with games because of earlier rainouts.
You’re in the thick of a league race. You’re also almost to the postseason tournament.
What is a coach to do, especially with his starting pitching?
The ideal situation is to have two or more quality ones that can satisfy both needs.
And chances are that most teams that are in the league do.
But if those options aren’t there and choices have to be made, that’s where making tough decisions come in.
League titles are good for the players and schools. Going as far in the postseason as possible is what coaches and athletes strive for.
Talk about a balanced league.
The Northern Ohio League standings show all eight teams within two games of each other.
Upper Sandusky and Fostoria lead the way at 6-4, followed by Willard at 5-4, Norwalk 5-5, Bellevue, Shelby 4-5 and Galion all 4-5 and Tiffin Columbian 4-6 with four or five league games remaining.
Standings in the Firelands Conference show Mapleton, at 8-1, with a one game lead over Crestview. South Central is third at 5-3, followed by New London 5-5, St. Paul 4-5, Monroeville 4-6, Plymouth 3-6 and Western Reserve 0-8.
The tournament starts Saturday or Monday for most teams.
It can be a tough dilemma for coaches and we should find out soon what they decided to do.
