Perkins senior named District Player of the Year

Perkins senior Matt Gundlach was named Division II District Player of the Year in voting announced Monday, and two coaches were named Coach of the Year in their respective divisions.

Sandusky coach Matt Martin won the honor in Division I after a turnaround season for the Blue Streaks, who won their first Greater Buckeye Conference title Tuesday. Perkins coach Ray Neill, who has the Pirates undefeated at 24-0 and ranked No. 1 in the state coaches poll, won the honor in Division II.

The Blue Streaks had three players -- Eric Jordan, Mike Drake and Zak Esposito -- on the Division I All-District first team, more than any other team.

Top-ranked Perkins had four members on the Division II All-District first team, including Spencer Bryant, Xavier Turner, Cody Koch and Gundlach. Other area performers named to the first team were Willard's Matt Hamons, Norwalk's Andrew Enderle and Bellevue's Joe Consolo.

The Division III All-District team had four area players, all from the Sandusky Bay Conference; Edison's Cory Schmidt and Tyler Koch, Margaretta's Jed Cullen and Huron's Eric Hahn.

In Division IV, Monroeville's Greg Hauler and Plymouth's Mike Whittington were named to the All-District first team.
