FOOTBALL: Perkins beats Sandusky in Hometown Showdown

SANDUSKY

Playing in front of 4,982 fans at Strobel Field in the anticipated Perkins vs. Sandusky “Hometown Showdown,” it was understandable for Perkins quarterback Spencer Bryant to be nervous — and a little forgetful.

With his team already leading 21-0 midway through the fourth quarter, Bryant put the finishing touches on a 28-0 Pirate victory.
The senior rolled to his right after being flushed out of the pocket, fired a pass to Tony Henderly that only Henderly could catch — which the senior receiver did in the back corner of the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown with 7:11 remaining.

On the play, Bryant lost his helmet after being pushed to the ground — but quickly hopped to his feet to celebrate. Bryant finished 10-of-14 for 198 yards and two touchdown passes.

“I knew he caught it when I got back up, but I had to pick my helmet up,” Bryant said. “I have to learn to strap my helmet a little bit better, and I’ll be all right.”

A week after limiting Bellevue to 12 points, the Perkins (2-0) defense let the Sandusky offense get inside the red zone only once — which resulted in a wide right 35-yard field goal by the Blue Streaks’ Victor Groot — while limiting them to 124 yards of total offense and seven first downs.

Sandusky head coach Mike Franklin did not speak with members of the media after the game.

Assistant coach Eric Talbot told the Register that Franklin, who remained in the Blue Streaks locker room for more than 40 minutes after the game, would not comment about the loss.

In eight quarters this season, Sandusky (0-2) has not scored a touchdown.

“If you shut them out, they’re not going to beat you,” Perkins coach Gary Quisno said after the game. “I give assistant coach Tim Obergefell and the defensive staff a lot of credit for the game plan. They did a great job getting them ready to go. We’re not real big there, but the kids are aggressive and run to the ball. That’s a good combination.”

Neither team was allowing any ground to each other for nearly the entire first half, with the game deadlocked in a scoreless tie with just over five minutes left in the half.

What may have been the game’s biggest momentum swing came as Perkins senior Nico Caponi caught a 22-yard pass to the Sandusky 20, but fumbled the ball and the Streaks Davion Caston came up with the ball as Sandusky appeared to avoid the Pirate scoring threat.

However, quarterback Lucas Poggiali fumbled the ball on the ensuing play, and Caponi atoned for his fumble by taking it right back and recovering at the Sandusky 18. It took five plays and 2:16 off the clock, but Bryant capped the short drive with a 1-yard scoring run on third-and-goal for game’s first points at the 4:58 mark of the second quarter.

Kicker Chris Baxter added the first of four extra points for the 7-0 lead.

“That was big, to get it right back the next play and then score the first touchdown,” Quisno said. “That was real big.”

Said Bryant, “I felt the momentum start going our way after we got that first touchdown. I don’t really know what to say, I’m speechless. There was a lot of people here and it was a lot of fun.”

After the Streaks went three-and-out on the ensuing series, Perkins took over at its 32 with 2:45 left in the half and quickly Richard Hohler picked up 24 yards on the first play.

Just two plays later, Hohler and the offensive line found a huge seam as the Streaks didn’t read a misdirection counter — and Hohler covered the distance for a 36-yard score with just 51 seconds left in the half for a 14-0 lead.

On the fourth play of the second half, Bryant found running back Kyle Finn alone about 20 yards down field, and Finn went up the right sideline for a 56-yard touchdown catch at the 10:37 mark of the third quarter for a 21-0 lead.

“I think Sandusky played a lot better than they did last week, and we won’t face a team as big and physical as they are the rest of the season,” Quisno said. “They brought a lot of pressure, and I thought Spencer played a great game, making some big throws under pressure.”

Henderly caught three passes for 58 yards and the score for Perkins, while Caponi caught four passes for 52 yards. Hohler ran nine times for 72 yards and a score. For Sandusky, Poggiali ran 11 times for 27 yards while Caston caught four passes for 29 yards and Mike Drake caught four passes for 20 yards.

Quisno talked about the pomp and circumstance that surrounded the game.

“It was great, and kind of like a playoff atmosphere here with the hype all week coming into it,” he said. “We told our kids this is history, so seize the moment, enjoy it, have fun and come out and play your best — and they did.”

WOW...As a 1982 graduate of Sandusky High and former Bluestreak football player, I remember a day when we couldn't even get a scrimmage out of Perkins, now their beating the Streaks!!!  Let me first congratulate Pirates nation as I never want to undermine a win.  Most importantly however, What the hell is going on in Sandusky.  In 3 yrs of varsity football, we lost 7 games,  and were in state playoffs each yr.  The talent may not be on the field but it still exists in the community.  I live in NY now, and coach football myself.  I'm simply
outraged at the amount of apathy I see in the Sandusky community.  I was there a few weeks ago, talking football of course, and just didn't get the buzz I'm used to.  Have you grown to accept mediocrity and perhaps losing?  I'm a freak for football, and still see it as the earth's greatest game.  Many of my best friends and moments were gained or occurred on a football field in either high school or college.  I'm just not feeling it on the Blue Streak side of the house.  Where's the motivation, sacrifice, accountability, and of course effort.
Is apathy killing the Streaks?  Do the, players, coaches, and community---care any more, or has Perkins taken the title as the next best thing???????????

Congrats again to the Pirates.
Regards for a great season!!!!!

AFAN i can't even comment anymore on this subject.  You have just stated everything that I have been trying to say. But you have stated it so eloquently. Everything thing you said in the previous post is absolutely true! Fine job on the post you just presented. AFAN you ought to be working for the Sandusky Register they are in need of some good writers.(lol)

The team lost the game.  The players did not perform.  That is the responsibilty of the coaching staff.  That is why they get paid.  Coaches are not just waiting for the next Orlando Pace so that they can take credit for the talent of the team.  Coaches maximize the ability of the players.  Coaching matters just as much as talent.

Also, we are talking about competing with Perkins.  We are talking about Lorain Southview (Sandusky is the only team they have beaten in the last 5 years according to Hazelwood) . We are not talking about the big boys from Cleveland.  You can not convince me that with the right coaching staff Sandusky would still have lost to Perkins 28-0.  I am just saying compete.  I am not saying go undefeated.  But no TDs in two games against two of the weaker teams on their schedule?  28-0 in an important game?

Perkins doesn't have so much talent that Sanduky had no chance.  And how can Franklin attract more talent with games like these?  Football is a big commitment, and high school kids care more about winning and having fun than tradition.

I am not going to argue is Franklin a good person, a good coach, is his system a good system.  I am going to ask two questions.  1. If Franklin doesn't get any blame for the losses, why would he get any credit for the wins?  and 2. If you are given time as a coach and the team is not winning or showing progression why should you stay around?  I am not for firing the guy right now.  But after the season the coaching needs to be evaluated, and if things don't change, I do not see how the athletic director can justify keeping staying with the current coaching staff.

I was at the game and I know alot about Football......  I dont care who you get to coach......Get ANYone..... Hell bring Cook back........ The Blatant Obvious Fact is THEY HAVE NO RUNNING BACK..... Next blatant fact THE QUATERBACK DOESNT HAVE AN ARM OR ANY TOUCH..... The RECIEVERS when they got a ball that actually got to them DROPPED THE BALL WHEN IT HIT THEM IN THE NUMBERS......... I dont care what offense you run.....with these things happening I dont care who the coach is.... THE DEFENSIVE SECONDARY WAIT...THERE WAS NONE...  The only thing that was promising was the run defense and special teams....... Thebest offensive play is FIELD GOAL!

SO KEEP SLAMMING FRANKLIN AROUND....  WHEN YOU GET YOUR WAY IT WILL BE THE NEXT GUYS FAULt!!!

People there is no talent......or not enough...... number 4 is a heck of a player though  he was all over the place........... So IF you want to comment about Franklin  I ASK YOU DID YOU EVEN SEE THE GAME???????

For The Record I was rooting for the STREAKS!  But that performance was pitiful!

BUT HEY ITS GOT TO BE FRANLINS FAULT......RIGHT????

Brett the Hitman I like a lot of your comments but saying Franklin is not a bad coach is like saying Jeffrey  Dahmer would have made you a good neighbor! That is so far from the truth. I have watched Streak football Franklin's entire tenure and he is a bad coach. I don't think he is a very bad guy but he is not a good coach. His record speaks for itself. If Sandusky wins one game this year I will be very surprised. They still have some talent but they don't have very many gritty kids that will do what it takes to pull out the tough games.

I cannot say that Franklin is or isnt a bad coach, I am too far removed from the city and system...my only knowledge coming from friends still there, the Register and most importantly, results.

Obviously, the talent at Sandusky is not the same as it was in the 80's and 90's. Some of this can be attributed to open enrollment, but how about the years before open enrollment was even an option? What is the excuse for those year? Honestly, since Coach Cook left, the program has not been the same. It has been one coach after another all with pretty much the same results.

Losing to Southview two years in a row is embarrassing but it is also a disheartening way to begin successive seasons. Getting shutout at home, in a game that has been anticipated for years, certainly does not help. Coaching at this level isnt all about the X's & O's...it's also about developing, leading and motivating these players through good times and in bad.   Franklin not coming out to speak to the media following the game concerns me. You wanted this job...you got this job...now face the consequences of this job. If he cannot face the media to answer tough questions, how am I supposed to believe that he has the ability to find a way to reach these kids and turn this season around?

FLTBLuestreak...The person who wrote that Franklin isnt a bad coach obviousky has not paid a bit of attention to the last two games. Was this person at the Southview game? Did he or she notice that we ran the same play each and everytime? No change ups? The biggest thing of all is being that he didnt have the guts to come out and speak to the media about the loss..two straight shut outs. That is part of being a coach. You take the good with the bad. Obviously he cant handle the bad. Maybe the person that thinks Franklin is a good coach has never seen him coach live. Come watch and you will find out what the rest of us already know. Franklin has to go. He has experienced coaches..AKA Coach Notestine who get looked over for someone he choose who a heck of a lot less experience than Coach Notestine. Mike needs to wake up and just resign before he humiliates himself and our program. One last thing..I will have to agree and say that ever since Coach Cook left the program tings have never been the same. When Coach Cook was there you learned about the game of football and in doing so he also taught you to be a family, to take on responsibilty, and to have committment and pride to yourself and your team!

I dont claim to be an expert on football hower it does not take a genious to figure out that the Head coach of Sandusky Mister Mike Franklin needs to resign or be fired. No one in high school football plays a 3 3 5 defense. His offense game plan..brilliant Mike..Want to try that next week again against Toledo St.Johns. There will be another blow thanks to you. Franklin is reason we lost to Lorain Southview. You cant run the same freakin play all night long and expect to get somewhere. Perkins congrats on your win. Thats all i will say on that. I hope people in sandusky realize that Mike Franklin needs to go! when you have a veteran coach Like Coach Notestine and you have him on the bottom of the list ...there is a problem. He has lost more knowledge about football then Mike will ever know. Franklin do us a favor and resign! Gee Mike you had nothing to say to the media, why is that..because you dont want to take the blame for any of your many coaching mistakes?

Fine job Perkins Pirates you deserved this victory! Perkins ran a well balanced offense and their defense played a really nice game. On the flip side of that I thought the Streaks showed up to play but after Strickland fumbled deep in Perkins territory it was all down hill. Perkins capitalized and they never looked back. The good teams take the momentum and when they have you down they put their foot on your throat and that is exactly what Perkins did. Perkins started a little slow in the first quarter but they stuck to their game plan. They didn't try to go for the homerun early but they lulled the Streaks to sleep with the run and then bam hit them with the pass. After the first quarter they executed to perfection. Now the Streaks offense was very sad to watch. I can't even comment on what I saw because most of the night I could not believe my freakiing eyes. Very disappointed with the Streaks performance but the coaching staff never gave those kids a chance to win with the offensive scheme they ran. I certainly enjoyed the entire night I though both teams played hard and with a lot of classs and it was one of the most exciting events I have experienced in this community in a long time. Again Pirates congrats to you and we wish you well on the rest of the season. And Streaks we wish you well too but after watching last night unfortunately it is going to be another longggggggggggggg season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
