After one of the most embarrassing losses in school history, the Bellevue Redmen had to answer the bell Friday night in a Northern Ohio Leage game against Fostoria at Bellevue Athletic Field.
Ed Nasonti’s team did just that, jumping out to an early 14-0 lead and riding that out to a 28-13 victory to improve to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the Northern Ohio League.
Last week the Redmen lost 69-7 at Tiffin Columbian, but with three weeks left the team still controls its own destiny in the NOL race.
“We got out on them early and it was a tough night with the weather, but I’m happy with the way the kids bounced back after last week,” Nasonti said. “It was a nice win for us. They put one of their better athletes at quarterback and he did a nice job for them, but we slowed them down enough in the second half.”
Bellevue opened the scoring with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Curt Watson to Ed Haynes, which was caught off a pass deflection at the 8:14 mark of the opening quarter. Watson then found Tommy McPeak for the 2-point pass to cap the 11-play, 71-yard drive for an 8-0 lead.
Less than four minutes later Watson found Miles Foos on a 41-yard touchdown strike to cap a six-play, 45-yard scoring drive. With Watson lined up at kicker, Bellevue did a direct snap to Watson at kicker, who threw and completed a pass that was ruled out of bounds to leave the score at 14-0 with 4:32 remaining in the first quarter.
Fostoria then scored twice in the second quarter, getting a 30-yard run from Trevon Tucker and a 33-yard run from Antwan Williams to allow Fostoria (3-4, 1-3) to pull within 14-13 at halftime.
Watson capped a nine-play, 64-yard drive in the third quarter on a quarterback sneak from 1 yard out, but the extra point attempt failed to leave the score 20-13.
Bellevue closed out the scoring and the win on a 32-yard touchdown run by Jeff Roth with 5:52 left in the game. Roth then ran in the keeper for two points on the conversion attempt.
Roth ran for 90 yards and two scores on 12 attempts out of the Wildcat formation.
“Jeff played a great game for us,” Nasonti said. “We were able to do a little bit with the Wildcat and let him do some stuff. He was able to run the ball real well and get those scores for us. But we’re just real happy with the win. We bounced back, and with three weeks left we still control our own destiny.”
Watson finished 10-of-25 passing for 200 yards and two touchdowns, while Foos caught six passes for 134 yards and a score.
Nano Wagner added 46 yards on 10 attempts, while Dom DeBlase had 44 yards on nine attempts.
Bellevue goes on the road for the final time this season when it travels to Upper Sandusky (1-6, 1-3) next week.
