FOOTBALL: Perkins, St. Paul hosting first round; Edison traveling to Genoa

Perkins and St. Paul will get one more home game under the lights this season.

Fresh of conference titles, the Pirates (9-1, 6-1) and Flyers (10-0, 7-0) finished in the top four in their regions, earning them the right to host a first-round game.

The final OHSAA playoff rankings were released Sunday afternoon. The Pirates, Flyers and Edison have been in the postseason hunt all year.

“It’s huge. It’s really nice to stay in our own backyard, our own confines,” Perkins athletic director Mike Strohl said.

“It doesn’t guarantee anything, but it saves on that travel — that three hour bus ride and then playing a game,” he said. “We’re really happy to host a playoff game Friday. It helps our fans that they don’t have to make that trip. We expect a big turnout and a lot of support.”

Edison (8-2, 5-2), making its second-ever playoff appearance, will hit the road for Saturday’s Division IV contest at Genoa.

No. 4-seeded Perkins, which shared the Sandusky Bay Conference with Clyde, will host Tipp City Tippecanoe (8-2), and edged the Red Devils by 0.45 points with help from Sandusky and Norwalk wins Friday.

It’s the first trip to the postseason since 2006, and the first time the school will host a playoff game since 2000 — when the Pirates won the AP Poll championship with a 10-0 season.

“We’re all really happy we’re staying home. It makes life a whole lot easier,” Strohl said. “Tipp City has been to the playoffs five straight years, so they’re a formidable opponent.”

St. Paul, the No. 2 team in Division VI, Region 21 which won a third straight Firelands Conference title Saturday with a 49-14 win over Monroeville, welcomes Berlin Center Western Reserve.

The Flyers have advanced to the regional championship in each of the past five season seasons  and were state semifinalists in 2006. They made the championship game in 2004.
