The game of baseball has thrown its fair share of curveballs at left-handed pitcher Andy Oliver.
Oliver, a 2006 Vermilion graduate, had every intention of returning to Toledo for Wednesday’s exhibition game between the host Mud Hens and the Detroit Tigers at Fifth-Third Field as a member of the Tigers’ starting rotation.
Instead of being the first-ever player in area history to open the season in the starting pitching rotation of a Major League Baseball team, Oliver was in the Triple-A Mud Hens’ dugout for the Tigers’ 8-3 victory in front of 12,000 fans.
