Aside from story of the year, with 2009 turning to 2010 in just a couple weeks, it's also time to look back at area sports moments that caught our attention since the turn of the millenium in 2000.
Myself and sports editor Anthony Moujaes have been racking our brain on this over the past few days and by ways we can possibly present it in print, but here are just my random moments that pop in my head since 2000...I'm sure I'll miss something, so feel free to chime in with your moments as well.
In NO particular order, here we go down memory lane...
2009: The Drive. Remember this? I hope so, it was two weeks ago. St. Paul's football team drives 97 yards in the final 3 minutes to score the game-winning TD with five seconds left of a 24-21 win over Delphos St. John's to win the Division VI state title, the fourth such football title in Register history. All of which came on the heels of a fourth down goal line stand to set it up. Even though it's fresh in our minds, we'll be talking about that one for ages.
2007: Jon Diebler scores 69 points at Bellevue, but the Redmen win at the buzzer. Diebler then breaks Ohio's all-time scoring record for just the third time in 58 years vs. Norwalk on his way to Mr. Basketball.
2007: Perkins baseball finally ends regional drought and reaches the state tournament, losing to a tight game to Canfield.
2008: Perkins boys track team rolls up some early points and wins the Division II team state championship.
2002: The Edison boys track team wins Division III state championship behind a handful of outstanding individual and relay performances.
2002: The triangle is born. Huron, Norwalk and St. Paul - 3 teams located within 14 miles of each other - all advance to the volleyball state championships, and the weekend is capped when St. Paul and Huron win the state titles back-to-back on a Saturday afternoon in November.
9/11, 2001: This will always stand as a where were you moment that affected everything, including sports. It was an emotional week with practices and some sporting events canceled so people could be with their families as the nation mourned. Football games being played three days later lacked a lot of emotion in many instances.
2000: The late Alan Schlessman wins the Division II state golf championship. This is a sport I'm terrible at, and I marvel at those who are actually really good at golf, yet alone the ability to be the best in the state at such a young age.
2009: Sandusky accepted into the Northern Ohio League for the 2011-12 school year. Another moment that will transcend time...a move that wouldn't have even been considered no more than 4-5 years ago becomes reality as economic woes across the country also shook up league and conferences everywhere.
2009: Dailyn Moore wins Division I 110 hurdles state championship after tumultuous week that included a late Friday night arrest the week before, followed by a court appearance that saw charges dropped. Moore then capped it off with an easy sprint to the title.
2009: The Hometown Showdown. Perkins vs. Sandusky FINALLY meet on the gridiron amid much hype and celebration. Perkins went on to win 28-0 as the game itself fizzled.
2006: Willard beats Upper Sandusky 101-98 for the Division II district basketball championship at Ashland University in a 32-minute regulation game as Willard's Jimmy Langhurst and Upper's Jon Diebler - the co-district players of the year - each scored 55 points for their team in one of the most memorable games EVER played.
2008, 2009: The Sandusky American Legion Post 83 baseball team wins back-to-back state titles in rather convincing fashion, qualifying for the Great Lakes regional tournament for the first times ever. These guys were dominant in 2008, struggled for most of 2009, then ended the year on an absolute tear to again make itself known as one of the best Legion programs in the entire country.
2008: After a nearly 30-year career at Oak Harbor that saw well over 200 wins, football coach Gary Quisno retires, only to accept a job at Perkins a short while later.
2008: Billed as one of the biggest non-conference football games in area history from a successful program standpoint, Huron and St. Paul meet in Week 3 and live up to the hype and then some in front of 2,317 fans with St. Paul pulling out a late 21-14 win that saw both teams sell out on every play of a non-conference game. Just one of the best high school games I've ever seen, which is what we all thought it should have been on paper going into it...very rarely does that end up happening.
2004: Monroeville football coach Steve Ringholz wins his 200th game days after former player Jason Sparks is killed overseas in a military humvee accident.
2007-08-09: The Monroeville wrestling dominance begins, which is still going on. The foursome of Logan Stieber, Hunter Stieber, Chris Phillips and Cam Tessari all rack up multiple championships, as the possiblility remains for all four to walk into rarified air as 4-time state champions.
2005-06: St. Mary C.C. wrestling caps it's incredible run by coach Jude Roth with back-to-back state titles in 2005 and 2006.
2009: Norwalk volleyball coach Grace Hutchinson retires after 32 years that saw 552 wins, the most-ever by a coach in any sport in Register area history.
2009: Edison wins it's first-ever boys basketball championship in it's 23-year tenure in the Sandusky Bay Conference.
2006: After stepping aside for family time after a state title in 2002, Nancy Miller returns to the St. Paul volleyball bench and wins another championship, this time over New Knoxville in four games.
2009: Huron volleyball wins Division III state championship in dominant fashion after opening the year with a stunning loss to Edison, which snapped a 99-match winning streak in the Sandusky Bay Conference.
2008: Bellevue coach Walt Snyder wins his 400th softball game.
2007: Norwalk's Grace Hutchinson wins 500th volleyball match.
2003: After narrowly missing out on it's still elusive first SBC title, Edison's football program qualifies for playoffs for first time ever as a No. 8 seed, losing at Urbana, 28-7.
2001: Despite entering the playoffs as the No. 6 team in it's 8-team region, Bellevue's football team proceeds to win Division III region 10 to reach the state semifinals for the second time in six seasons.
2003: Monroeville football finally breaks through and wins a regional title, topping SMCC 28-20 in Huron to advance to the state semifinals where they just missed out on a state championship game berth, falling 27-24 to Columbus Grove.
2008: Lyle Falknor resigns after 23 years as Bellevue's boys basketball coach, only to be hired shortly after at SMCC, where he remains today in his second season.
2006, 2007: In girls basketball, Margaretta and Perkins reach the state tournament in back-to-back seasons, with Margaretta falling by 11 in it's semifinal and Perkins by 8 in it's semifinal.
2006-08: Perkins distance runner Cory Leslie's impressive state championship runs in cross country and track. I don't even have time to count how many state titles he won, but we all know it's quite a few.
2008: Clyde becomes the first softball team in Register history to reach the state tournament, upsetting state power Keystone by a 4-3 score in a Division II regional championship at Bucyrus to qualify for the Final Four.

Week 10 of the 2005 football season saw Fremont Ross and Sandusky meet for the 100th time on the gridiron. True, the ancient rivalry lacks some the intensity of years gone by but this was a historic milestone for what is Ohios second-oldest high school football series.
