BASKETBALL: Sandusky comes out flat in loss to powerful Marion Harding

Sandusky girls coach Nic Venerucci said the Streaks had to play the best game of the season to beat Marion Harding Thursday night at Sandusky High School.

The Blue Streaks (3-3, 1-2), according to Venerucci, instead played the worst game of the year in getting outscored 19-2 the first 6:21 of the game and eventually suffered a 69-54 Greater Buckeye Conference loss.

Sandusky was facing Harding’s small forward Shawtia Dyer, who has signed with Louisville while in the stands were scouts from Richmond, Kent State, Xavier and Dayton were watching President’s point guard Brenae Harris.

“We started off overhyped and not ready to play,” Venerucci said.

“Not only that, but we didn’t hit any shots.  We took fourteen 3-pointers in the game, and made none.”

The Streaks closed out the opening quarter with six points to bring the deficit to 21-8 heading into the second.

Dyer picked up her second foul early in  the second quarter, and the Streaks took advantage scoring 19-second quarter points, with Maurisha Brown and Brianna Crowe combining for 12 in the quarter.

The Streaks closed out the half trailing the Presidents, 35-27.

Sandusky had trouble with the 2-3 zone in the first quarter but without Dyer’s presence, Venneruci said his team started to attack.

“We figured (the zone) out and they had a hard time dealing with the ball pressure,” he said. “We had a goal of making it down to six or seven before half and we came close to that.”

For the Streaks to come back in the third, Veneruci said the Streaks had to come out with more pressure and even better basketball to stand a chance.

Harding scored 26 points in the quarter, holding a 61-40 advantage after three.

“We didn’t come out with any fire or any effort and (Harding) is a good team,” he said. “Our girls looked at them and gave them the win without even giving them a challenge.”

The Streaks were led by Crowe, who scored 14 points with Cara Croom adding 12. Capreece Irby added 10, with Brown chipping in with eight points and 10 rebounds.

Harris led the Presidents with 18 points, with Dyer adding 15.  Kierra Hairston and Lakia Baldwin contributed 10 each.

“We play Mansfield Senior Tuesday night at Mansfield, we will see what Sandusky team shows up.” Venneruci said.
