BOYS BASKETBALL: Streaks losing skid continues in loss to Admiral King
Lorain Admiral King jumped out to an 18-7 first-quarter lead Wednesday on its way to a 62-48 defeat of Sandusky in the consolation game of the Holiday Tournament at Sandusky High School.

The Admirals had three players score in double figures. Gary Donald led the Admirals with 17 points, Anton Chaney-Harris had 16 and Pete Rufo, who hit three 3-pointers, chipped in with 15 points.

For the Blue Streaks (3-4), Jarrod Williams led all scorers with 21 points and Cordney Strickland had 16.

The Admirals had a slight advantage at the free throw line, as they outscored the Streaks 13-8 from the stripe.

“They did a nice job on the boards,” said Sandusky coach Steve Keller. “Number 32 (Chaney-Harris) really hurt us on the glass.”

King shot the ball well in the first quarter, getting eight points from Rufo and six from Donald to gain the early lead.

The Admirals were able to use their size inside with Donald, Chaney-Harris and Tevin Jones to get plenty of high-percentage shots and keep Sandusky off the boards.

Sandusky was able to cut the deficit to nine points at the half, 25-16, and got to within 30-25 at the 5:22 mark of the third quarter after Strickland hit a 3-pointer from the left corner.
King, however, proceeded to go on a 10-0 run that was capped by a Donald layup, making it 40-25.

Sandusky responded with an 8-0 run of its own to make it 40-33, but never was able to mount a serious comeback thereafter as King took a 43-33 lead into the fourth quarter.

After starting the season 3-0, the Blue Streaks have suffered four straight losses and find themselves with a losing record entering the new year.

When asked how his team is going to respond, Keller said, “We just have to continue to work hard in practice. We have to climb the ladder, so to speak and try to keep our confidence up.
“We have to prepare ourselves for our rival next week, Fremont Ross. It’s always big when we play them. We’ll just keep working to improve and get better.”

The Blue Streaks travel to Fremont Ross on Jan. 7.
