PLYMOUTH — Nicole Lyons just keeps getting better and better for the Plymouth Big Red.
On Thursday night at Plymouth High School, Lyons, a junior, scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds leading the Big Red to a 50-40 win over the New London Ladycats in Firelands Conference play.
The Big Red improved to 11-2 overall and 8-1 in the FC, while New London fell to 9-5 and 5-4.
“Nic is coming along for us,” Plymouth coach Scott Speicher said. “That adds a new dynamic for us when Nic throws in those kind of points. That’s a new dimension we didn’t have.”
Speicher said it all starts with Lyons’ work ethic.
“She put in a great summer,” he said. “She worked on her speed and coordination and hit the weight room real hard.”
Speicher, who grew up in New London, knew the Ladycats would battle.
“They are a scrappy group,” he said. “They’ve done a nice job over there.”
Junior Whitney Jacobs added 10 points and six rebounds for Plymouth. Bre McVey and Sarah Shirey each scored six.
“Tonight, we were focused on pounding the ball inside,” Speicher said.
Speicher wasn’t concerned that McVey and Shirey only scored a combined 12 points.
“What they lacked in points they made up for in assists,” he said.
Plymouth led 12-10 after one quarter and 22-16 at the half. The Big Red held a 37-29 edge after three.
New London was paced by Sydnee Cooke’s 16 points. Megan Thomas added 15 points and 10 rebounds. Rian Thierry had six points.
“At the end of the first half, they were out-rebounding us 16-4 on our own glass,” New London coach Greg Vogelsong said. “We just didn’t get many second looks. We ran pretty good defense and pretty good offense, but we have a saying of ‘put the siding on the house’ and we just didn’t do that.”
Vogelsong said his team is making strides.
“We were picked last by the papers,” he said. “The girls are doing a good job. We just need to learn to make more contact underneath and get to the free-throw line. We have to be more aggressive.”
The Ladycats host Ashland Crestview on Saturday.
“We beat them by one the first time,” Vogelsong said. “It should be a good matchup.”
The Ladycats knocked down just 17-of-61 action shots, which included 1-of-15 three-pointers.
New London had 16 turnovers, collected 30 rebounds and was 5-of-11 from the line.
Plymouth shot 18-of-42, 1-of-8 in triples, made 13-of-20 free throws, grabbed 35 rebounds and committed 23 turnovers.
The Big Red go to Mapleton at 1 p.m. Saturday.
“They have a nice ballclub,” Speicher said. “We have some work to do.”
Plymouth won the junior varsity game, 46-37.
